Snow Glow

One of my all-time favorite movies is “Beautiful Girls”. The cast is great, the plot entertaining, but more than anything, I love how it truly captures how cold winters are in Minnesota. It reminds me of my hometown and why I still live here even when I’m a summer girl at heart.

The other thing I love about it is Uma Thurman’s character. She proves that a woman can still be sexy even when she’s dressed in layers and trades heels for Sorels. I think she is at her most beautiful in this movie. Her “natural” makeup gives her a “I just walked a mile in the cold and snow” glow and I have invested time and money in trying to re-create the look. And, I think I’ve finally mastered it! I spent the holiday weekend doing very “Minnesota” activities and had several local gals ask what makeup I use along the way.

Uma and her “snow glow”

Now, when you see how many products go into achieving this look, don’t be dismayed. It actually only takes me about 7 minutes to complete and many of you can probably eliminate some steps (I am not blessed with beautiful skin). Some products I have profiled before and some are new to my routine. Those are the ones I’ll focus the most on.

First step is prep. I mix a little of Paula Dorf’s Jet Set Glow tinted moisturizer ($35) with Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm ($34). Jet Set Glo adds a little more moisture and glow to the beauty balm. I first started using it in the nineties when I read it’s what the makeup artist for “Sex and the City” used on Sarah Jessica Parker. I’ve been a fan ever since. The beauty balm does a great job of covering, but if I have a certain blemish that needs a little help, I dot on Loreal’s Magic Lumi concealer ($12). I finish off with a dusting of Bare Mineral’s Ready powder foundation ($29). A little goes along way when it comes to this powder. It has great coverage and keeps the shine at bay. For those of you with perfect skin, you can totally skip this step!

Next comes the color! I use Shiseido Lacquer Rouge RD501 Drama ($25) as a cheek stain (which I actually dot on my apples before powder). It’s not sticky and lasts all day. I follow that up with my all-time favorite bronzer, Too Faced Snow Bunny ($29). A swipe on the forehead, apples, nose, and chin gives a perfect winter bronze. And then it’s time for my new love, Stila’s Custom Color Blush in Self-Adjusting Coral ($20). This blush actually works with your PH so you get the perfect color for your skin. I apply to my apples with a very light hand, as it has ample pigments. My cheeks now have the look of a gal who’s been playing in the snow. And on my lips I use the newest from MAC-après Chic lipstick ($15). après Chic is MAC’s latest collection and all the products were made to give you the look of someone who’s been skiing the slopes all day.

Last, but not least, I do my eyes. I keep it very simple. I first put Dior’s Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum ($28) on my lashes and follow that with two coats of MAC’s new mascara Extreme Dimension Lash ($20). This mascara is seriously fabulous! My eyelashes actually reach my eyebrows (and no flaking or clumping). Speaking of eyebrows, I just swipe on Revlon’s Brow Fantasy ($8) to add some color and hold them in place. Then a spray of Urban Decay’s De-Slick Makeup Setter ($29) and I’m good to go!

Now, Like I said, it seems like a lot, but it’s actually quite simple. And I’m sure you have products at home that will work just as well. The key is to have glowing skin, in-from-the-cold apples, a more natural eye, and just-bitten lips. You’ll look happy, healthy, and like a true winter girl!

5 Minute Face

I love my morning routine. There’s something very comforting about having a regime. It gets my day off to the right start and sets the stage. But just because I enjoy applying lotions and potions, it doesn’t mean I want it to take forever. Let’s be real, most of us have a limited amount of time in the morning to get ready and we need things to be streamlined. Here’s a look at my five minute face (give or take). It may seem like a lot of products, but they are quick and easy to apply. You’ll have a natural, rosy glow in a matter of minutes.

The first thing I do is apply a beauty balm. This is a moisturizer, primer, concealer, and SPH all in one. It will save you lots of time (and money).

I then apply a concealer on the hard to cover spots. This takes two seconds, as the bb cream does a great job covering most flaws.

The next step is to apply a blush stain (gel or cream). You could skip this step, but I find my cheeks stay rosy longer if I use a stain.

I then sweep on a mineral powder. It gives me a flawless finish and helps to keep the oil at bay. I find mineral powders to be the best. They seem less cakey and are more natural.

Next comes a powder blush. I know, it seems like overkill to most of you. But I’ve found that using both a cream and powder blush gives me great color and is less likely to melt off during the day.

It’s on to the eyebrows. I like a gel instead of a pencil. The color sweeps on with a mascara wand and is super easy. It gives definition and holds brows into place.

To set everything, I use a makeup setting spray. This keeps my face looking fresh and set all day.

If it’s a day I’m going to be out and about, I’ll add mascara to the ritual. I always use a primer. It makes my lashes even longer and keeps the mascara from smudging.

Last step is the lip. For most days I apply a tinted lip balm. It gives my pout a natural pop of color while keeping them soft and moisturized.

So, there you have it, my five minute face. You can add or subtract to fit your needs, but this is what works best for me. What’s your five minute face routine?

Makeup Setter

Makeup fade. You know what I’m talking about ladies…you spend a good portion of your morning doing your face and by lunchtime your makeup has disappeared. Either you spend your lunch hour reapplying or you leave it and look drained the rest of the day. Frustrating to say the least. But fret no more, Urban Decay has the perfect makeup setter and there’s something for everyone.

Dew Me, All Nighter, and De Slick Makeup Setting Sprays $11-$29
available at Urban Decay, Sephora, or Ulta

The All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Setting Spray is for all skin types and is hypoallergenic. It keeps your makeup in place and looking perfect for 16 hours, no matter what the elements (seriously, even in a hot tub). Urban Decay uses patent-pending Temperature Control Technology which lowers the temperature of your makeup so it stays put all day.

Dew Me is perfect for dry to combination skin. It keeps your skin moisturized and glowing all day. Your makeup won’t crack and settle into the fine lines and your skin won’t feel tight. There is no need to re-moisturize during the day.

De-Slick is ideal for oily skin. It will keep skin beautifully matte all day without clogging pores or causing breakouts. It also absorbs excess sebum throughout the day and controls surface shine. Your skin looks refreshed and your makeup flawless.

I have used both the All Nighter and De-Slick. Both are great, but I use De-Slick every day. After I finish doing my makeup, I spray De-Slick all over my face (microfine mist) and then blast skin with my blowdryer (so it dries quicker). I love this product. Even my lips retain whatever color I have put on them before the spray (no matter how much I eat and drink) and my cheeks still look rosy at 10pm. Take it from someone who suffers from mid-day melt, this is a must have product!

Lush Lashes

When I was younger I had great eyelashes. They were long and thick and dark. They were so long they would hit my eyeglass lenses. But it seems that the older I get, the more thin and brittle my lashes become. And because I refuse to grow old, I needed to find a solution.
Latisse was the first product to hit the market, but 2 things stopped me from trying it. First, you need a prescription (I’m sure my eye doctor would laugh as he’s always commenting on how long my lashes are). Second, and this is a biggie for me, it can cause brown pigmentation of the colored part of your eye (which may be permanent). I have blue eyes. I love having blue eyes and I do not want them turning brown. So, I set off to find an alternative.
I started with Peter Thomas Roth’s Lashes to Die For Platinum. I really liked it and saw great results. I used it for quite awhile, but at $125 a tube….this unemployed girl could not swing it anymore. I headed to Sephora to see what else there was and found a lot of choices. I went with Urban Decay’s Lush Lash System. I liked that it was a two-part system. There is a clear gel serum you put on your lash line (upper only). The serum accelerates lash growth. The other part is a conditioning mask you put on like mascara. The results have been amazing. My lashes are definitely fuller and longer, and I don’t have the breakage or lash loss that had been plaguing me. One tube is $42, but it lasts for several months. There are many other lash accelerators on the market now, but I think I’ll stick with Urban Decay!
