The Queen of all BB Creams

I know I’ve written about BB Creams before and have had different favorites along the way, but this one is different.
Tarte BB Tinted 12-Hour Primer is the holy grail of BB creams. I tried it at the beginning of summer and instantly knew I had found THE ONE. It goes on with the silkiness of a primer and the coverage of a light foundation. I barely need any concealer. It also moisturizes well, is an anti-aging treatment and has SPF. It does a great job evening out my skintone and covering imperfections and it diffuses light which minimizes all my pesky fine lines, pores, and wrinkles. Best of all-it’s oil free and comes in 5 shades, which is unusual for a BB. If you’re looking for a makeup that’s light weight and made with more natural ingredients, I highly recommend this product. You won’t be disappointed!

Moisturizing Sunscreen

All my life I’ve received comments about how soft my skin is. I’ve been a moisturizing fool for as long as I can remember. The thought of getting dressed without applying moisturizer makes me squirm. Just like our faces, the body needs a barrier as well. During the winter I opt for an intense lotion because Minnesota winters really dry out the skin. But in the summer, I usually use a great smelling sunscreen as my lotion. The only problem with that is they aren’t always moisturizing. Now, the makers of my favorite smelling sunscreen, Hawaiian Tropic, have created the perfect blend of moisturizer and sunscreen. And I am in love.
Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration Lotion is the only sunscreen with hydrating ribbons. It nourishes and pampers skin while providing a broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection (available in SPF 12, 30, and 50). Infused with silk protein, nourishing anti-oxidants, and exotic botanicals, this lotion is very lightweight and not greasy at all. It really feels quite wonderful on my skin and gives me a good 12 hours of moisture, even while out in the sun. And best of all, it has that signature Hawaiian Tropic fragrance. One whiff and I’m back in my childhood. Yummy!

I find this to be the perfect moisturizer for summer. My goal is sun protection, hydration, and to smell like the beach. Mission accomplished with Silk Hydration.

Surf’s Up-Protect Your Assets

The days are getting longer, the temperature is getting higher, and it’s only a matter of time before my days can be spent at the beach. I’ve written several times already about the importance of proper sun protection, and although I have not always been diligent, it is now a top priority when I’m having fun outside. I’ve discovered some new, super fun and fabulous products that not only look good, but they offer excellent protection. So, all you need to do is have a blast soaking up the rays and playing in the surf. These amazing items will take care of the protection!

And don’t forget to hydrate! I love coconut water, especially Vita Coco. They have really yummy flavors and a nifty straw (kind of like a juice box). It’s the perfect way to stay hydrated and refreshed while at the beach.

You can find Vita Coco and other coconut waters at all grocery stores.

And remember to reapply your sunscreen. This is the part I always forget and I have the sun spots to prove it.

Airbrushing Made Easy

I’m always on the hunt for a good pressed powder, especially one that doesn’t settle into those fine lines around my eyes. I’ve tried a lot of the expensive brands and have liked many, but have been less happy about the price tag. I mean, this girl doesn’t have a job! I read about a powder from Physician’s Formula and was anxious to try it. I haven’t really used this brand since I was much younger, but I gave it a shot and fell in love.
Physician’s Formula Mineral Airbrushing Pressed Powder SPH 30 is divine. The ultra-fine powder delivers impeccable coverage and gives my skin a flawless airbrushed finish. I apply it after my beauty balm for just a little more coverage. The appearance of my fine lines, wrinkles, pores, and sun damage are visibly reduced, and my skin has a softer look and feel. It holds up very well, even when I work out and sweat up a storm. Best of all, it’s hypo-allergenic and contains a high SPF. It’s only available in three shades, but even the translucent would be great for touch-ups. My skin stays shine free and looks radiant. FYI-if you’re going to use it as your primary sunscreen, make sure to apply it 15 minutes prior to sun exposure and use in conjunction with a water-proof sunscreen if you’re aqua bound.

Sunscreen That Creates Clearer Skin

I was a naughty girl this past weekend and did not bring sunscreen with me when we went for a hike (there may have been some beach time as well). Of course, every product I put on my face contains sunscreen, but as we all know it’s essential to reapply. And then there’s the problem of finding one that doesn’t leave my skin greasy, especially given my battle with oily skin. Well, I have found a solution for anyone that battles acne or the greasies.
DERMAdoctor “Ain’t Misbehavin’ Skin Clarifying and Mattifying Broad Spectrum SPF 30” actually is the perfect sunscreen for those with less than perfect skin. This little beauty helps oily, combination, or blemish-prone skin from premature aging due to UV exposure. This will hydrate and protect skin without feeling greasy or sticky, which I am all about. Plus, it’s formulated with willow bark, a known clarifying agent. So, it can actually help prevent new blemishes from occurring and will help eliminate the ones you already have. The light texture absorbs instantly and is for the face or the body (another bonus for those with problematic back and chest areas). Just be sure to reapply every two hours if you’re outside.

And just to prove how important sunscreen is to the younger people, here’s a picture (albeit a weird one) of my chest. I didn’t have freckles growing up-this is all sun damage. We didn’t know about or use sunscreen in the 70’s and 80’s, and this is the result. Sunscreen is vitally important! You don’t want a freckle chest when your 40+. Nothing ages you more!

Perfect Sun Protection

You just couldn’t ask for better weather here in Minnesota. Yesterday, the hubby and I went kayaking down the Minnesota river. Kayaking! On St. Patrick’s Day! In Minnesota! Unheard of and absolutely amazing. But as many people have learned the hard way, just because it’s March doesn’t mean those sun rays won’t burn you. As one who suffers from sun damage (I was a child in the 70’s and 80’s. Baby oil was the name of the game), I knew I would need sunscreen. Good thing too. I have a very nice tan going, but that would have been red if not for sunscreen. While I don’t mind putting it on my body, I always hated applying it to my face. It always seemed greasy and not very attractive. But a couple of years ago I discovered the ultimate sunscreen for faces from Peter Thomas Roth. A renowned skin guru, he has created the perfect protection that gives you a youthful glow and protects you from damaging rays. There are many formulations, but these are my favorites. I never leave home without one in my bag.

20120318-100014.jpg
Instant Mineral Powder SPF 45 $30
This is a transparent mineral powder that comes with a convenient brush applicator. It blocks UVA, UVB, and infrared rays, and prevents sunburn, skin damage, freckling, and discoloration. This matte powder is so easy to apply-just twist and brush over your face. It’s talc-free and mess free. There is no residue either.

20120318-100528.jpg
Bronze Instant Mineral Powder SPF 30 $35
This is my favorite. I use this as my powder all summer long. It has a dual chamber that allows you to blend your perfect color. It mixes transparent powder with a mineral bronzer and you can choose light, medium, or dark. It’s a finely milled powder that gives you a soft, residue-free layer of sunblock. You get a build-able, sun-kissed glow and ultimate protection.

20120318-101028.jpg
Oily Problem Skin Instant Mineral Powder SPF 30 $30
This has all the sun protection you could need plus it’s blemish-fighting and oil-free. This matte powder absorbs oil, helping to reduce shine and prevent future breakouts. And don’t we all need some help with shine in the summer?

All products by Peter Thomas Roth and are available at Sephora

These powders really last too. I have had the matte powder for years. The bronzer I used all the light color in one summer, but still-it got me through several months. Of course, now I have a lot of the medium and dark left. Oh well. There really is no better sunscreen for your face. It’s convenient, easy to use, and gives you a wonderful, youthful glow!

Battle Of The BB Cream

When I first wrote about Dr. Jart BB Cream back in October, there were only a few brands available here in the States. Fast forward five months and it seems every beauty brand has one in their arsenal. And with good reason. BB Cream (or beauty/blemish balm) got it’s start in Asia and has quickly become a must-have for millions of women world wide. This miracle cream combines moisturizer, primer, concealer, and foundation into one product, streamlining your morning routine. Think of it as a super-charged tinted moisturizer. But with so many offerings, one can become overwhelmed when choosing a balm. I have spent the past couple of weeks testing out the “latest and greatest” and am going to share my findings with you. I hope it helps you find the right bb cream for you.

MOST AFFORDABLE

20120301-095829.jpg
Garnier Miracle Skin Perfecter BB Cream $12.99
This balm is available in two shades and unfortunately neither worked for me. What I did like was the consistency. It spread very easily. It didn’t wear well on my oily skin and I was shiny in a matter of hours. I think this would be a perfect fit for someone with normal to dry skin. The best part is that it’s $20 less than all the other creams.
available at all major drugstores

BEST LUMINOSITY

20120301-100433.jpg
Too Faced Tinted Beauty Balm $32
This gave me the best glow. It’s available in four shades and the colors are very pretty. It has a anti-aging, multi-mineral complex that promotes cell health, strengthens skin elasticity, and enhances luminosity. The consistency was middle of the road-spread easily but more on the thick side. It offers good coverage but had worn off my cheeks by the end of the day. I did like the overall appearance.
Available at Ulta

BEST SHINE REDUCER

20120301-101036.jpg
Smashbox Camera Ready BB Cream $39
This had great coverage and definitely kept the shine at bay all day. The UVA/UVB protection helps inhibit oil to prevent your face from getting shiny. It wore very well. It comes in five shades so there is a choice for everyone. While the formula does create a smooth finish, it was very thick and hard to spread. The good news is that it doesn’t look thick on your face. This gets two-thumbs up for sure!
available at Sephora

BEST OVERALL COVERAGE

20120301-101626.jpg
Estee Lauder Daywear Anti-Oxidant Beauty Benefit Cream $38
This has the best coverage and overall look. It comes in two shades, which can be tricky, but the lighter one worked great. It offers powerful protection with their proven super anti-oxidant complex and SPF 35. The consistency was thick and spread okay (very similar to the Smashbox). It wore very well all day and helped control shine. Plus, it has an amazing scent.
available at all fine department stores

Overall, these creams were all great. I wish I could take the best of each and formulate a super bb cream. I would recommend getting samples and trying them first. BB Creams really are the best and there is absolutely one that will work for you. I hope I’ve provided you with a starting point. I’m almost out of my Dr. Jart (which is still wonderful) and am now very conflicted about which one to get next. Because of my oily skin, probably the Smashbox or Estee Lauder, but the colors were so luminous in the Too Faced. I really wish the Garnier worked for me. I could save some big $$!
