Black on Black

Hello my lovely stylistas! Today I had to decide whether or not to renew my domain, and after much thought I decided to give it another year. My new position has me very busy, especially with the holidays, but I really want to make the time to continue blogging (and hopefully with much more frequency).
Today I want to discuss the “Black on Black” trend. In my job, I have to wear black head-to-toe every day. While I was fine with this as I wear black most days, I have found it challenging to keep it fresh and new. I came across a wonderful article at PopSugar about this trend and I am feeling quite inspired.

Anne Hathaway looks amazing in this black ensemble. The form-fitting dress is sexy and the longer hem makes it classy. Add a little fur jacket, suede bootie, neutral lip, and simple jewelry, and you have the perfect outfit for all your holiday parties.

Gwyneth Paltrow is always chic. She makes what could be a very casual outfit into something fabulous. A tailored jacket, tank, and silky trousers are instantly raised to a new level with the addition of fringed heels.

Kristen Stewart has really become a fashionista. Leather dress paired with quilted leather jacket (great idea to add a different texture when wearing similar fabrics) is biker chic and a strappy bootie is so, so sexy. Add smoldering makeup and you have an urban uniform that will keep you rockin.

Karolina Kurkova also opts for leather. A pencil skirt and fitted bomber jacket make a terrific pairing and a simple pointy heel adds sophistication. Swipe on a burgundy lip and you are right on trend.

I adore this look worn by Olivia Palermo. I would absolutely wear this to work. I’m a huge fan of layering and this is done just right. A long trouser, stellar heels, and black pearls complete the look. It’s classy, trendy, and fun.

Victoria Beckham always gets it right. A cropped blazer with a tired miniskirt is flirty and fun and the only accessories you need are a dangerously high bootie and little box clutch.

Taylor Swift is sporting my usual work look. Cropped black pant, peplum top, little heels (or booties now that’s it’s cold), and a red lip. Simple, elegant, and fabulous.

Stacy Keibler has my second favorite work look-leggings, long top, and a shorter layering piece. Adding a colorful clutch adds interest to an already stunning ensemble.

You can never go wrong wearing black-on-black. It’s always perfect for every and any occasion. You will look classy, chic, and sophisticated.

Denim Jacket 2012

Just when I think denim jackets are over, someone styles it in such a fabulous way that I need to pull mine out again. Jenna Lyons, the powerhouse behind J. Crew ( and one of my idols) sported a denim jacket and skirt to the Met Gala recently and I’m in love. She is so fantastic and one of the best stylists out there. Take a look-

Jenna didn’t want to wear duchesse silk satin or anything with sparkles or pearls. She wanted her style to shine through. She had the denim jacket fit and re-tailored to raise the waist-band. She isn’t wearing a shirt underneath. Instead, she had custom cuffs and collar made and stitched into the jacket. So simple, yet so incredibly stylish and fabulous. And I love her pink heels!

Inspired by Italian designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jenna sketched the skirt during a meeting (2 weeks before the ball). Honda, J. Crew’s pattern-maker, then draped and stitched the skirt right in her office.
Schiaparelli’s autobiography, “A Shocking Life”, is available on Amazon

Jenna choose pink to go with Schiaparelli’s book. She also had a peplum sewn underneath the skirt because she wanted to articulate a silhouette she had seen on the pages of the autobiography.
For more on the story, please check out J. Crew’s blog.

Lyons isn’t the only celebrity that does the denim jacket right. Here’s a look at some other style mavens rocking their denim.

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the denim jacket. Maybe it’s because I’ve just seen it worn incorrectly too many times or maybe it’s because I wore them in the eighties. But I have to admit it is the perfect layering piece for summer. It’s super cute dressed up or casual. 2012 has brought us some modern and edgy variations. Here are some of my favorites-

Vintage Sea Blue Wash $100 available at J. Crew
The original version of Jenna’s

J. Brand Denim Jacket $229 available at Neiman Marcus
I love the wash and the fit of this style.

AG Adriano Goldschmied “Robyn” $198 available at Neiman Marcus
A classic looking denim jacket.

Moto Aztec Burnout $90 available at Topshop
This has slight distressing and looks a little vintage.

MNG by Mango $28 available at JCPenney
I do not condone wearing denim-on-denim by any means, but I do like the silhouette and price of this style.

BDG Denim Trucker $69 available at Urban Outfitters
This style is a little over-sized and a little edgy.

There are oodles of choices out there. Just remember a few things-wash, cut, and wear. A fitted jacket is more chic, choose a wash that can be worn in many different situations (no tears or rips or bleach spots), and buy a silhouette you can wear often and comfortably. And please-no denim-on-denim. I know some celebs and designers show this look, but it’s just too much.

Style Inspiration-Carine Roitfeld

This week I have chosen Carine Roitfeld for my fashion inspiration. Carine was the editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris from 2001-2011 and is one of the most amazing stylists out there. Since leaving Vogue, she has done many freelance gigs, including Chanel’s fall 2011 and spring 2012 ad campaigns. This fall she has two new projects debuting. One is the launch of her own fashion magazine, CR Fashion Book (I cannot wait!) and the other is a line for MAC cosmetics. This collection will focus on the eyes, strong brows, and nude lips-her signature look. I love her “grunge” look and unique style. She is a true inspiration for all fashionistas out there!

Uber-cool lady!

So very Parisian, and I love the boots.

She started her career as a model and quickly moved behind the scenes at French Elle.

Huge fan of army green pants, especially when they’re dressed up with heels.

The many faces of Carine

Always love me some fur!

Denim skirt dressed up with blazer and heels.

She’s one style icon not afraid to recycle. Here the denim skirt takes on a more beachy vibe.

Her ad campaign for MAC will be in black and white. Very unusual for a cosmetics ad, but totally Carine.

With her book “Irreverent”, which was released last Christmas. It is the ultimate fashion book.

A peak inside her fabulous book.

Carine Roitfeld “Irreverent” is available at Amazon and is now $58.82 (was $100). I still need to pick up a copy!

Carine is truly a role model for anyone interested in fashion. I can’t wait to see what she does next!

Fresh Blooms At Zara

Even though the temperature has dipped today, spring is in the air and I’m getting very excited for warm weather fashion. It always hits this time of year. You are bombarded by images of shorts, sandals, and tanks. They look so comfy and fun, but it’s far too chilly to actually wear them. It’s okay, we only have a couple of months to go. So, in the mean time, check out the new looks from Zara. They will definitely get you in the mood for warm weather.

Polka-dot Dress $49.90
I love the Grecian look of this dress. Paired with Gladiator sandals, you have an outfit that will take you from day to night.

Short Parka $129
I adore parkas and this one would be perfect for spring and fall.

Skirt with Asymmetrical Hem $35.90
This is very different. It’s girly and edgy and would be super cool for a night on the town.

Wide-leg Jean $59.90
This is THE silhouette for denim this season. These are great-they have a slouchy feel and can work with a heel or a flat.

Low Back Sweater $49.90
This sweater is so feminine and the low back is super sexy. You can pair this with a skirt or jeans for two completely different looks.

Gauze Shirt $29.90
The shirt you’ll live in all season. Ideal for throwing on with any bottom and still looking totally put together.

Rustic Plush Sweatshirt $29.90
I live in sweatshirts when I’m at home and I’m always looking for new styles. This is super soft and cozy.

Lace-up Ankle Boot $129
Adore the heel, love the laces. These boots will get you noticed!

Cape Sweater $35.90
A great option for a layer piece. Capes are cool and far more stylish than a regular cardigan.

This is just a sampling of the new merchandise at Zara. And after looking at these pieces, I realize a lot of them can work right now. It’s all about what you style them with. Better hurry to Zara!
