Pure Envy…Lipstick that is…

I recently appeared on “Twin Cities Live” and “Kare 11 Saturday” to talk about Go Red for Women. I was honored to style three amazing heart survivors and to hear their stories. And I was relieved to learn I would have a makeup artist! I’m okay with the day-to-day makeup application, but this was TV….
I had no reason to worry. The makeup artists for Estée Lauder were fabulous and made each of us look natural, yet radiant.

One of the products they used on the four of us was their new Pure Envy lipstick in “Envious”. This red truly works with all skin tones. The color has real staying power and the formula does not dry out the lip. I have fallen in love-I use it every day. It’s a fantastic pop of color for everyone!

If you’re looking for a fun new lipstick for Spring, this is the one for you.

Black on Black

Hello my lovely stylistas! Today I had to decide whether or not to renew my domain, and after much thought I decided to give it another year. My new position has me very busy, especially with the holidays, but I really want to make the time to continue blogging (and hopefully with much more frequency).
Today I want to discuss the “Black on Black” trend. In my job, I have to wear black head-to-toe every day. While I was fine with this as I wear black most days, I have found it challenging to keep it fresh and new. I came across a wonderful article at PopSugar about this trend and I am feeling quite inspired.

Anne Hathaway looks amazing in this black ensemble. The form-fitting dress is sexy and the longer hem makes it classy. Add a little fur jacket, suede bootie, neutral lip, and simple jewelry, and you have the perfect outfit for all your holiday parties.

Gwyneth Paltrow is always chic. She makes what could be a very casual outfit into something fabulous. A tailored jacket, tank, and silky trousers are instantly raised to a new level with the addition of fringed heels.

Kristen Stewart has really become a fashionista. Leather dress paired with quilted leather jacket (great idea to add a different texture when wearing similar fabrics) is biker chic and a strappy bootie is so, so sexy. Add smoldering makeup and you have an urban uniform that will keep you rockin.

Karolina Kurkova also opts for leather. A pencil skirt and fitted bomber jacket make a terrific pairing and a simple pointy heel adds sophistication. Swipe on a burgundy lip and you are right on trend.

I adore this look worn by Olivia Palermo. I would absolutely wear this to work. I’m a huge fan of layering and this is done just right. A long trouser, stellar heels, and black pearls complete the look. It’s classy, trendy, and fun.

Victoria Beckham always gets it right. A cropped blazer with a tired miniskirt is flirty and fun and the only accessories you need are a dangerously high bootie and little box clutch.

Taylor Swift is sporting my usual work look. Cropped black pant, peplum top, little heels (or booties now that’s it’s cold), and a red lip. Simple, elegant, and fabulous.

Stacy Keibler has my second favorite work look-leggings, long top, and a shorter layering piece. Adding a colorful clutch adds interest to an already stunning ensemble.

You can never go wrong wearing black-on-black. It’s always perfect for every and any occasion. You will look classy, chic, and sophisticated.

Style Inspiration-Kate Young

One of my idols is stylist Kate Young. Earlier this year she ranked number one on The Hollywood Reporter’s list of the 25 most powerful stylists and for good reason. Young is responsible for styling Michelle Williams, who ruled the red carpet for her role in “My Week with Marilyn” and Natalie Portman, who ruled the red carpet the year before for her role in “Black Swan”. But Kate does more than style celebrities for red carpet events, she also styles runway shows and editorials. She got her start working for Anna Wintour at Vogue and eventually went freelance. What I love about Kate, besides her amazing talent, is her individual style. She has really cultivated a “signature” look. White hair, black wardrobe-this is one fashionable woman.

The many looks of Kate. I love her laid back, neutral wardrobe. It’s very versatile and chic.

I need to get a pair of black leather leggings.

She’s also an editor-at-large for Macy’s I.N.C. brand

Nothing’s better than a fur-lined anorak in the winter

I love the blonde hair against the fur-stunning

Red lips and lots of sparkle

Simply classic

I’m a fan of layering a sweater and tank or tee and pairing them with leggings

Michelle Williams and the orange dress, styled by Kate. It was risky but worth it. This is one of my favorite gowns of the season.

This really is Kate’s year, but I know we will continue to be amazed and inspired by her fashion, talent, and passion.

On My Shopping List

The hubby and I spent the day hiking in Taylor’s Falls (Interstate Park) so I didn’t have much time to write a blog for Sunday. This park borders Minnesota and Wisconsin on the St. Croix River. It’s home to many “potholes” that were formed in lava rock and has fabulous trails along the river. It was moving fast and furious today so no kayaking, but we did get a workout climbing over ancient boulders.

A view of the river looking across to Wisconsin

There is one pothole you can climb down into. Really amazing…

I did manage to put together a “dream” shopping list to share with you all. I had the new Anthropologie catalog waiting for me when we got home and it got me thinking about some fabulous items I would love to have.

Elizabeth and James “Bax” platform sandals $177 available at Nordstrom
I love these platforms. Because the sole is one height, they are much easier for me to walk in than heels or wedges. And I do need some brown summer shoes…

Topshop Lips in “Sartorial” $16 available at Topshop
Every gal needs a red lip and this one is bright enough to play off of your tan.

Glimmered Ankita dress $198 available at Anthropologie
This is my kind of dress. I love the peasanty silhouette and the colors are really fun. The longer sleeves make it a perfect selection for evenings (I’m always cold).

Ojon Rare Blend Oil Total Hair Therapy $35 available at Sephora
I’m anxious to try this new multi-tasking oil. It protects, nourishes, softens, and boosts your hair’s shine. It’s next on my list of products to sample.

Rachel Zoe Belted Shoulder Tote $450 available at Nordstrom
I really want a red bag and this one is exactly what I’m looking for. Alas, it’s a pipe-dream (at least until I start working again!).

Style Inspiration-Kerry Washington

To pass the time while on my treadmill, I’ve been watching ABC’s “Scandal” on my iPad. This is a great show. And the main reason is Kerry Washington’s portrayal of Olivia Pope. She’s a DC fixer who’s tough, smart, yet has a soft side. Kerry has quickly become one of my favorites to watch. She’s a fantastic actress and incredibly beautiful. So today, she is my inspiration.

Super cute shirt dress that has an edge due to the details. And the red booties are a fabulous touch.

I adore a-line dresses and this one is gorgeous. She is stunning.

I’m a huge fan of sequins and cozy sweaters. She looks beautiful and sweet.

By adding a tuxedo-inspired jacket, casual jeans and a tee become dressy. It’s all about adding the right element.

Red denim has been all the rage lately, and adding an animal print top makes this a real standout.

I love big sunglasses and these look fabulous on her.

As Olivia Pope on “Scandal”. The costume designer does a fantastic job on every character, but I especially love Olivia’s wardrobe.

Kerry in Marchesa at the Met Opera. This is real glamour.

This Oscar de la Renta gown was made for her body.

This Donna Karan is a risky choice, but Kerry makes it work.

At the White House Correspondent’s Dinner. The color is divine and the cut is sexy, yet modest. Perfection.

If you haven’t seen “Scandal”, I suggest you catch up on it this summer. I just hope it doesn’t get cancelled (I seriously watch 3 dramas on the major networks, and so far 2 have been cancelled). I really am looking forward to watching more of Kerry Washington and the amazing character she plays.

Flip Flop Your Way Into Summer

Growing up, the summer footwear of choice was the “thong”, which thankfully now is called the “flip flop”. They were and are so easy to kick on and off, and are super adorable. I still live in them all summer, and while I know they aren’t the best for your feet (especially when you’re on your feet all day), I find they are the most comfortable sandals available.
But all brands are not created equal. I prefer Havaianas. Why? Because they are the most comfortable flip flops in the world. Created in 1962, they were inspired by Japanese sandals made of fabric straps and rice straw soles. This is why all Havaianas have a foot-bed that is a textured rice pattern. They are made of 100% secret rubber, they don’t smell, and they last forever. They are available for men, women, kids, and baby, and come in oodles of colors and styles. Havaianas is also a company that gives back and supports many initiatives, including the Institute for Ecological Research, Conservation International, and the Alpargatas Institute. And did I mention that they are super cute?

Celebrities also love their Havaianas. They are perfect for any summer outfit, whether it be for fun in the sun or a dinner on the town.

Nicole Richie steps out in silver

A rare glimpse of Victoria Beckham in flip flops (she usually has killer heels on)

Jennifer Aniston goes casual with the “Brazil” Havaiana

I already mentioned that they come in many styles. Here’s a look at my favorites this season.

Slim Fashion in chili red $26 available in 3 styles

Top Metallic in navy blue $18 available in 6 styles

Slim in pumpkin $24-$26 available in 15 styles

Slim Allegra in pumpkin $26

Something fun that Havaiana offers-create your own shoe. A very easy process to go through, you choose colors and added extras. Very cool. For more information, styles, and retailer information, please visit Havaianas

Mad Men Cosmetics

In keeping with the Mad Men theme from yesterday, today I feature the new cosmetics collection from Estee Lauder. This limited edition Mad Men Collection arrives just in time for the AMC series 5th season premiere (March 25) and features two must-have items that are sure to please. What I love about them is that they harken back to a time when glamour was still evident in every day life. Women oozed style and class, and something as simple as putting on lipstick gave you an aura of elegance. These are two products you will be proud to pull out of your bag.

The lipstick in Cherry $25
This pretty cherry-red hue will look wonderful on all skin types. It comes in a 1960’s era gold pouch.

Creme Rouge in Evening Rose $40
A beautiful, dewy rose shade that is packaged in a gorgeous gold and turquoise compact.

The product and packaging have “handbag elegance”. In other words, something fabulous to pull out of your bag.

The collection debuts on March 18th and will be available at Estee Lauder and Bloomingdale’s.
