In The Navy

When I was in junior high, a mere thirty years ago, wool pea coats were all the rage. They kept us very warm, looked cool (especially paired with penny loafers), and went with all of our “Preppy Handbook” outfits. They had a “new” feel, but have actually been around for centuries. Originally worn by European, and then later, American sailors, the pea coat is known for its broad lapels, double-breasted fronts, and large buttons. Amazingly, they were first featured in American newspapers as early as the 1720’s. Yes, pea coats truly are timeless and classic.

A very modern take on the pea coat

This fall I needed a new coat for a trip to Chicago. I tried on oodles and could not find one I liked. And then I thought, “What about a pea coat”? I haven’t worn once since junior high (and really wish I would have held on to mine). I found a fabulous black one from Calvin Klein. It’s a wool-cashmere blend (so it’s not so itchy) and I love it! I feel very sophisticated and put together in this jacket and it really works for almost every situation. Here are my top five picks for this versatile wonder.

Top Left: Laundry Faux-Fur-Collar $320
Top Right: Miss Sixty Faux-Leather Trim $225
Middle: Calvin Klein Wool Cashmere Blend (my choice) $129.98
Bottom Left: Kenneth Cole Reaction Wool Blend $140
Bottom Right: London Fog Wool Blend $140

all available at Macy’s

So, if you’re in the market for a new jacket, try the pea coat. You won’t be sorry (and they’re all on sale for the holidays)!

I’m Back…..

Hello my lovely stylistas! I’m super sorry I’ve been away for so long. I have been so busy with my new job and I absolutely love it! It is amazing to wardrobe, style, and influence women and men throughout Minneapolis. I have had some very rewarding and emotional sessions with clients and that makes it so worthwhile.
Okay, enough about me. I want to share with you some exciting news. If you’re a fan of Nicole Richie (like me) then you’re going to want to head to Macy’s September 12th. The ever-stylish Ms. Richie is launching her first collection for Macy’s Impulse and it is fabulous. It really embodies Nicole’s bohemian style and has an edge to it as well. This capsule collection consists of 25 pieces that is done in rich jewel tones, lots of faux leather, some awesome zipper pull detailing, and is quite masculine vs. feminine. Here are my favorite pieces-

The collection is available at Macy’s for a limited time starting September 12th. Locally, it will only be at the Southdale location, but you can always try on-line too. And if you think you want to view the collection, contact me for a private showing!!

Another item I want to cover is Fashion’s Night Out. This event will be held in fashion cities world-wide on September 6th. This global initiative was originally created in 2009 to celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, boost the industry’s economy, and put the fun back into shopping! It has been wildly successful and continues to grow each year. Minneapolis has many glamorous events planned and the festivities run from 4-9pm. The hubs and I will be attending Macy’s red carpet fashion show and will then scoot over to Neiman Marcus to take in their last FNO event here in the Twin Cities.

For more information on FNO events in Minneapolis, please visit Downtown MPLS

Even if you can’t make it to the festivities, just get out and shop on September 6th. Brick and mortar stores can use all the support they can get!

I’m going to try really hard to blog more often. I miss it and all of you!!

Affordable Minimalism

Remember in the 80’s when Brooke Shields rolled around on the floor saying “No one gets between me and my Calvin’s”? Well, I do. And I know I ran right out and bought a pair of Calvin Klein jeans. As a matter of fact, my sister and I got quite a few pairs from our second cousin Lisa and we’d have our grandma sew the legs so tight we could barely get them over our ankles. Memories…My point is, Calvin Klein knows how to design for a woman and decades later he has masted the art of minimalism. Keeping it simple has never looked so good.
Francisco Costa, a designer behind the Klein brand, has a fantastic limited-edition capsule collection available now at Macy’s. For me, it was love at first sight. I was immediately drawn to the simple, yet chic designs and colors. Costa, a native Brazilian, was inspired by architect Paulo Mendes de Rocha’s imaginative and daring designs, and found them the perfect backdrop for his incredibly chic and minimalistic style. I bring these dresses to all of my clients and amazingly, they look fantastic on almost everyone. Made of viscose, crepe, and jersey, they flow over the body and give a sexy yet subtle silhouette. And with all different sleeve and length options, there is a perfect choice for every body type. Here’s a look at my top three choices.

Short-sleeve viscose crepe dress $155

Long-sleeve jersey v-neck t-shirt dress $135

Sleeveless jersey belted mock-neck dress $119.99

The entire Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein is available exclusively at Macy’s

This collection can take you to any event you may have this summer. And at prices under $200, you get top designer fashion for thousands of dollars less than his couture. And in my world, that’s a bargain.

Au Natural

I am a big fan of Michael Kors’ watches. I bought one a few years ago with a really big face (mainly because I couldn’t read small faces any longer) and get tons of compliments on it. They have fabulous quality, beautiful designs, and come in tons of stylish options. I’m really digging the new “naturals” collection and thought I’d share my favorites with you.

1. Ritz Sand Acetate Bracelet $225
2. Espresso Tone Stainless Steele and Horn Acetate Bracelet $160
3. Rio Alabaster Acetate and Stainless Steele Cuff Bracelet $195

These are more simple but still quite stunning. The colors will go with just about anything in your wardrobe, which is always a plus.

4. Chronograph White Horn Acetate Bracelet $275
5. Chronograph Gold Tone Stainless and Tortoise Acetate Bracelet $275
6. Chronograph Tortoise Acetate and Rose Gold Bracelet

I adore chronograph watches and these are gorgeous. They are chic and classic with just the right amount of bling.

all styles shown are available at Macy’s

If you’re in the market for a new watch, I highly recommend Michael Kors. Not only do they come in natural, but gold, silver, and my new favorite-rose gold.

Benefit’s Latest Offering

I’m a big fan of Benefit Cosmetics. My love affair started more than two decades ago with their cult favorite, Benetint, and De-Groovie, and continues today. Their box ‘o powder, Coralista, is one of my all-time favorite blushes. That’s why I am super excited for their latest offering.
Later this month, Benefit will launch a line of lip glosses inspired by their most popular blushes. If you’re a fan of Dandelion, Sugarbomb, Bella Bamba, Dallas, Hoopla, or Coralista (like me), then you definitely don’t want to miss out on these scrumptious lip glosses.

The glosses with their blush counterparts

And if you’re lucky enough to live in one of the following select cities, you can get a sneak peak this Friday, June 8th. Unfortunately, Minneapolis is not one of the chosen few, but here’s where you out-of-staters can get yours early-

White Plains, NY: Bloomingdale’s
Los Angeles: Macy’s Fashion Island
San Francisco Bay Area: Benefit Chestnut Street boutique

The Little White Dress

We all know how important the “little black dress” is. It’s the one article of clothing that will get you through any social event on your calendar. But now that it’s summer, maybe we should switch things up and try a “little WHITE dress”. Yes, the old rules dictate you should only wear white Memorial Day through Labor Day (and we are now in that time frame), however, I do believe the white dress can be worn all year long with the right accessories and other pieces in your closet. White is classic, crisp, and chic, and looks fabulous with a tan. Here are some celebrities rocking the LWD.

Jessica Stam is stunning in Marchesa

Tali Lennox in this season’s hot trend-the shirtdress

Gabrielle Union is perfection in this three-quarter number

Caroline Sieber shines in an almost kimono-looking ensemble

Cameron Diaz is chic in this white jumpsuit

Vanessa Hudgens personifies glamour in this gown from Philosophy di Alberta Ferritti

Ashley Madekwe in adorable in this shift from Zara

Rachel Bilson opts for couture Chanel (love this one)

Natalie Portman in a darling LWD

Every designer and retailer offers a LWD this time of year. Here are some of my favorites in stores now.

From left to right:
Lucca Couture Chiffon Tie Top Baby Doll Dress $69 from Urban Outfitters
Warehouse Metallic Lace Shift $83.50 from ASOS
Johann Earl for Urban Renewal Surplice Dress $59 from Urban Outfitters

Knit Lace Dress $98 from Banana Republic
Scallop Lace Tube Dress $98 from Arden B.
Amie Maxidress in whisper gauze $69.99 from J. Crew

Sunny Repose Dress $98 from Anthropologie
Calvin Klein Sleeveless V-Neck $99.50 from Macy’s
Pleated Bodice Dress $79.90 from Express
JNBY Asymmetrical Hem Tshirt Dress $80.90 from Nordstrom

There are so many great options for the LWD. It is the perfect summer staple and will quickly become your go-to item for all occasions. Paired with flip flops or heels, this dress is sure to be a hit.

Fashion’s New Shining Star

I really enjoyed watching NBC’s “Fashion Star”. The concept was fabulous! It was really educational to hear the feedback from the mentors (Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, and John Varvatos) and the buyers for Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and H&M. Anyone who’s thinking of becoming a designer could certainly learn a lot from this show. And how fun is it to see the designs and be able to purchase them the next day? In the end, it was former 4th grade teacher, Kara Laricks, that took home the big prize. She got off to a rocky start, but overall was consistent yet constantly evolving. Her collection stays true to her passion for menswear, but will appeal to the masses. And now you can purchase her line at Macy’s.

Kara Laricks, 38, winner of NBC’s “Fashion Star”

Sleeveless Lauren Solid A-Line Shift $79
This shift has a sleek, modern shape with quirky menswear-inspired details. And the printed lining is a whimsical touch.

Amanda Blouse $69 and Michael Shorts $59
Fabulous together but versatile enough to pair with other pieces, this tie-neck blouse and flat-front crepe shorts are sophisticated yet playful.

Sleeveless Ted Ankle Length Jumpsuit $89
I love a good jumpsuit and this one is a winner. With it’s menswear-inspired details and streamlined shape, it’s fresh and modern.

Sleeveless Cha Cha Romper $79
Adorable romper that has more of a tailored feel. The belt adds contrast and gives the romper a feminine touch.

Sleeveless Caprice Tuxedo Shift $79
This tuxedo-inspired shift has a chic fit with modern lines. This piece can easily transition from work to play.

All items available at Macy’s

It’s easy to see why Kara was crowned the new fashion star. I’m really excited to see where her career goes from here. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of Kara!
