Lilac Time Of Year

Growing up, we had a row of lilac bushes in our yard. I always looked forward to spring because the air would be full of the heavenly aroma of lilac. It is my favorite scent. Not to mention, they are very pretty and make lovely floral arrangements. Unfortunately, they don’t last long. And the bush we planted a few years ago has yet to produce blooms. What’s a girl to do? Well, the right home fragrance can make all the difference and give you the scent without the flowers. I have tried many different lilac scented products, but the one that mimics the real deal the best are the products from Yankee Candle. My house is filled with the aroma of real lilacs and is so delicious. But just like the blooms, the products are a very limited edition. If you love lilacs as much as I do, run to Yankee Candle and try some (or all) of these fabulous items.

Lilac Blossom Candle Collection $9.99-$27.99
These candles are fantastic and very long lasting. I usually get the big one and use it seasonally. They generally last a couple of years.

Lilac Blossom Room Spray $7.99
This is perfect for filling your entire house with the scent of spring blooms. Not too perfumery, just amazingly lilac.

Car Gel $4.99

Car Jar $5.99
These are the ultimate car refreshers. Long-lasting and delicious, your car with smell like heaven.

Reed Diffuser $9.99-$27.99
A decorative way to infuse your home with the scent of lilac. Not as strong as candles or room sprays, but emit enough scent to bring the outdoors inside.

Scent Plug-In Refills $6.99+
We always have plug-ins throughout our house. It’s an easy and safe way to fill your home with the aroma of fresh lilac.

There are many other Lilac Blossom products available at Yankee Candle. If you’re a fan of spring’s favorite flower, you will enjoy these home scent products. They are yummy!

Summer RX For Hair

I spend a lot of time out in the sun during the summer. Not only can those rays reek havoc on your skin, but they can do major damage to your hair. Your locks can become dry, damaged, and that color you pay a fortune for fades or completely changes. It’s really important to protect your locks from the summer environments (especially chlorine). Alterna has many fabulous products for your best summer hair, but the following three are my favorites.

Alterna Summer Hair After-Sun Hair Quench $20

This is a fantastic hydrating gel mask for parched hair that has spent a day in the sun. The unique texture delivers the hydration of a mask in a refreshing gel form. It is a rinse-out treatment enriched with essential minerals, vitamins, and natural humectants that instantly restore moisture. You’re left with silky, soft summer locks that shine. Most importantly, it protects hair from color fade caused by UVA/UVB and visible ray lights. This mask is a limited edition and is exclusive to Sephora.

Alterna Hair Sun-Kissed Mist $20

This is a super fun product that’s really good for your hair. It’s a lightweight golden bronzing and finishing spray. The mist creates all-over shimmer, infusing your hair with a sun-kissed glow. Your locks will be super shiny and sexy. As a bonus, the mist locks out humidity to tame those icky flyaways. And like the above mask, it protects your color so you get zero fade. And did I mention how yummy it smells?

Alterna Hair Sun Recovery Spray $20

This is a dual phase leave-in conditioner. It instantly revitalizes sun-parched hair, penetrating deeply to infuse moisture, improve manageability, and enhance shine. I carry this in my beach bag and spray it on my hair all day when I’m at the beach. It smells like summer, doesn’t leave my hair greasy, and really does help prevent color fade. Just spray it into towel-dried hair and style as usual (or let it air dry while you play in the sun!).

All products are limited edition (and the mask is exclusive) and are available at Sephora

I love summer hair products. They always smell like the beach and leave my hair full of body and shine. This Alterna line will not disappoint (but will sell out quickly).

Laser In A Bottle

I’m at the age when you start to consider medical procedures. I’m not against cosmetic surgery or procedures, but I am afraid of looking like a monster. You all know what I’m talking about (and if you don’t, just turn on “The Real Housewives”). No one wants to look like they’ve had work done, but most of us would love to turn back the signs of aging. Luckily, there are some wonderful at-home “procedures” you can do at a fraction of an office-visit price. And the results are almost as good.
I have fallen in love with Dr. Brandt’s Laser A-Peel System. Dr. Brandt has been in the business for over 20 years and has a huge celebrity following. He has done a magnificent job of creating products for home use that very closely mimic in-office procedures. The Laser A-Peel system tightens pores, improves elasticity, and reveals skin radiance in 5 minutes. This innovative duo is formulated with lactic and glycolic acids and delivers high-impact results in minimal time.
The system is very easy to use. Just pump the peeling solution onto a cotton pad and spread a thin layer over entire face (avoiding the eyes). Wait 5 minutes and then rinse with warm water. I could feel how smooth my face was while rinsing. Then apply the soothing gel and voila! Beautiful, radiant skin. Just after that short amount of time (and one use), I saw immediate results. My pores were tighter and some of the little “bumps” I have were diminished. It has a heftier price tag, but you only have to use it once a week so it should last quite awhile. But please take note-this product does contain alpha hydroxy acids that may increase your skin’s sensitivity to the sun. Always wear sunscreen!

Dr. Brandt Laser A-Peel System $75
available at Sephora

Smell Like The Beach

I’m sure you’ve all heard that scent is a powerful emotion. I happen to believe this is true. There’s nothing better than when you catch a whiff of something and suddenly you’re transported to a different time and place. Memories come flooding back and you can actually feel how you felt at that moment. It’s magical! This is what happened to me when I first smelled Bobbi Brown’s Beach. I instantly was back on the beaches of my youth and could feel the sun on my skin. To me, it’s reminiscent of Coppertone, sand, sun, and garden flowers. Delicious!! It’s been my summertime fragrance for years and always makes me feel happy. If you want to recapture your youth, just spritz this on and you’re there.

Beach Fragrance $55
A blend of sand jasmine, sea spray, and mandarin, this fragrance will transport you to the beach. The scent is long lasting and truly heaven.

Body Scrub $30
A combination of orange peel and pumice, this scrub gently and effectively removes rough skin. A moisturizing blend of shea butter and oils infuse the skin with moisture.

Body Lotion $35
This scented lotion provides moisture and prevents peeling while prolonging the life of your tan. Sunscreen not included.

Body Oil $30
This is a moisturizing oil that contains olive, sesame, avocado, and jojoba, plus vitamin E and C to give you soft, glowing skin.

Shower Gel $32
Formulated with pacific sea kelp extract, this gel moisturizes and softens skin while you shower. It’s the perfect way to start your day.

(trying out a new app!)
Bobbi Brown Beach is available at all major department stores. I have noticed that the fragrance is on back order right now, so if you love it-reserve it.

5 Minute Face

I love my morning routine. There’s something very comforting about having a regime. It gets my day off to the right start and sets the stage. But just because I enjoy applying lotions and potions, it doesn’t mean I want it to take forever. Let’s be real, most of us have a limited amount of time in the morning to get ready and we need things to be streamlined. Here’s a look at my five minute face (give or take). It may seem like a lot of products, but they are quick and easy to apply. You’ll have a natural, rosy glow in a matter of minutes.

The first thing I do is apply a beauty balm. This is a moisturizer, primer, concealer, and SPH all in one. It will save you lots of time (and money).
shown: Estee Lauder Daywear Anti-Oxidant Beauty Benefit Cream $38

I then apply a concealer on the hard to cover spots. This takes two seconds, as the bb cream does a great job covering most flaws.
shown: Loreal Magic Lumi Liquid Concealer $13

The next step is to apply a blush stain (gel or cream). You could skip this step, but I find my cheeks stay rosy longer if I use a stain.
shown: Tarte Cheek Stain $30

I then sweep on a mineral powder. It gives me a flawless finish and helps to keep the oil at bay. I find mineral powders to be the best. They seem less cakey and are more natural.

Next comes a powder blush. I know, it seems like overkill to most of you. But I’ve found that using both a cream and powder blush gives me great color and is less likely to melt off during the day.
shown: Tarte Amazoninan Clay 12hr Blush $25

It’s on to the eyebrows. I like a gel instead of a pencil. The color sweeps on with a mascara wand and is super easy. It gives definition and holds brows into place.
shown: Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel $21

To set everything, I use a makeup setting spray. This keeps my face looking fresh and set all day.
shown: Urban Decay De-Slick Oil-Control Makeup Setting Spray $29

If it’s a day I’m going to be out and about, I’ll add mascara to the ritual. I always use a primer. It makes my lashes even longer and keeps the mascara from smudging.

Last step is the lip. For most days I apply a tinted lip balm. It gives my pout a natural pop of color while keeping them soft and moisturized.

So, there you have it, my five minute face. You can add or subtract to fit your needs, but this is what works best for me. What’s your five minute face routine?

My 5 minute face minus mascara!

Liner Notes

As a young woman, I could not get enough eyeliner. That seems to still be the trend in the land of youth. As a more elegant woman (I refuse to say mature), I’ve come to realize less is more. Eye makeup can give away your age quickly. It has a tendency to settle into fine lines and creases or smudging onto the brow bone. But sometimes a lady does need a little definition and color. Enter the wonderful eyeliner/ shadow stick from E.L.F.
This combo is a dream. The eyeliner is so slim it’s virtually fool-proof. It has twist-up ease, so there’s never a need to sharpen (just make sure you twist it back down before capping). This soft gel liner makes it a breeze to create dramatic definition and the light-reflecting pigments help line the eye subtly but effectively. Because of my eye shape, I often get mascara along my upper lash line, but one swipe of this hides those mistakes. The smooth glide shadow stick provides a soft, highlighting color that compliments the liner and really makes my eyes pop. Again, I just do one swipe and have instant and flawless color. It wears really well and never ends up where it shouldn’t be. It’s available in 6 shades, which makes achieving a smokey eye super easy.

Eye Liner and Shadow Stick $3.00
available at ELF and most major drugstores (I got mine at Target)
