What’s In My Beach Bag?

Yesterday was super warm and balmy here in Minneapolis and it called for spending some time in the sun. I dug out my beach bag and did a quick inventory since I haven’t used it yet this year. I always leave it packed (even in the winter) so I can just grab it and go. I added some new items and got rid of some old (and let me tell you-some have been in there for 10+ years!), but all are essential for spending the day at the beach. Here’s a peek!

1. Sephora wide tooth comb
2. Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch SPF 30
3. Hawaiian Tropic Dry Oil SPF 12
4. Chanel Sunglasses
5. Sunsilk UV Shield for hair (not available anymore)
6. American Eagle beach towel (at least 10 years old!)
7. Charlotte Ronson beach hair spray
8. Target bikini top
9. Radio Figi bikini bottoms (old)
10. American Eagle beach bag (old)

Because so many items are unavailable now, I’ve put together a new list for you.

1. Sephora Collection wide tooth comb $4 available at Sephora-perfect for getting my snarls out
2. Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch SPF 30 $8.99 available at Target
3. Ouidad Sun Shield Leave-In Spray $20 available at Sephora– essential for protecting locks from damaging rays and elements
4. Hawaiian Tropic Dry Oil SPF 12 $8.99 available at Target The SPF isn’t very high but the smell is wonderful. I use it in conjunction with a higher SPF
5. Sunglasses $4 available at Forever 21 every girl needs a chic pair of sunnies
6. Charlotte Ronson Beach Hair $20 available at Sephora You know it’s my fave-spray on wet hair and get ultimate beach waves
7. Xhileration Striped Side-Tie bottom $14.99
8. Mossimo Mix and Match Halter top $17.99
I love pairing a solid and print when it comes to my bikinis-both available at Target
9. Farmers Market Tote $45 available at J. Crew I think “straw” beach bags are super cool and durable
10. Flip Flop beach towel available only in Target stores. A cool and cute beach towel is a must. I’ve had mine for at least a decade and I still love it!

A well-stocked beach bag will allow you to have hours and hours of fun in the sun. And I do recommend keeping it packed. This way you can just grab it and head outdoors-no thinking involved!

Summer Inspiration Board

Spending the day outside has got me thinking about my favorite summertime items. I was inspired to do a board that showcases my favorite things right now. I love doing inspiration boards because I am very visual and they help get my mojo flowing.

*Charlotte Ronson “A Perfect Touch” rollerball fragrance $20
This new fragrance was inspired by endless beach days. With notes of fresh citrus, blossoming florals, vanilla, and creamy musk, this harkens back to the summers of my youth. Charlotte created this scent due to the all the feedback she had regarding her “A Perfect Mess” beach hair. Everyone loved the smell and now it’s captured in an easy-to-use rollerball.
Available at Sephora

*Watermelon Lemonade. I first had this beverage when the hubby and I were in Las Vegas. We had spent the day at the pool and decided to try this little Mexican restaurant in Mandalay Bay. It is really the most refreshing summertime drink I’ve ever had. Yummy!!

*Sun-kissed hair. I love the color of her hair (and she is adorable). It truly captures the essence of days spent in the sun, sand, and surf. Gorgeous!

*Who wouldn’t love to spend the day laying in a hammock with their girlies? Sand between your toes, sun on your skin, listening to the surf. It would be absolute heaven.

*1960’s swimwear. And people think bikinis are scandalous now? This was quite risqué back in the day. It makes me think of a much simpler time. And vintage photos are always inspiring.

*Flip flop flower baskets. What a super cute and fun idea. I live in flips all summer long and this would be perfect in our backyard oasis.

*Chanel Orange Fizz nail varnish $27
Such a scrumptious color. It would be a great accent color to your tan fingers and toes.
Available at Nordstrom

*Top knots-the perfect summer accessory. I find myself sporting them more and more as the days get warmer. It’s much easier to relax on my lounge chair with a top knot. A ponytail just gets in the way!

*Free People “Ruffle Me Up” mesh tunic $88
I am dying over this retro-style tunic. The ruffled tiers are fabulous. This would be ideal as a beach cover-up or with a colorful slip under it. It’s one of my favorite pieces for summer.

Available at Free People

So, what inspires you this summer? I’d love to hear about any great products, recipes, or cute decorative pieces you may love.

It’s Always Summer With Gradual Self-Tanner

I’ve been asked a lot lately what the best self-tanner is. This is a tough one to answer because self-tanner reacts differently on everyone. I will say that I have had the best luck with ones that are also a body lotion. They build a more gradual tan and aren’t as smelly as regular tanners. Victoria’s Secret used to make the best one, but then they changed it and now I’m not a fan (contains bronzer which I find all over my clothing-yuck). But I do think I have found a replacement.
Charlotte Ronson’s new “Summer Always” scented gradual tan body lotion is really good. It’s a nourishing self-tanner that gradually provides a sun-kissed look without the damaging side effects of a real tan. You will get a radiant, glowing tan in as little as three days (if applied daily). This gem doesn’t leave pale patches, dark spots, or streaks, and that is rare in the world of tanners. Because it’s a body lotion, application is much easier and you’re more likely to evenly distribute it across your body. It’s infused with soothing avocado, jojoba oil, and vitamin E, so you’ll get the moisture you’re body craves. And best of all, it has a wonderful scent-very summery. I do recommend getting a sample, just to be sure it works for you, but I really love it.

Again, self-tanner reacts with your own body chemistry, so what works for one may not work for all. It’s best if you can try a sample first. This is impossible with drugstore brands, but if you’re in any department or beauty store, just ask. They are usually quite happy to make you one. Better to be safe than sorry.

Two Times A Charm

Most of us ladies use a blush and bronzer every day, especially in the summer months. I know I’m feeling a bit pale these days and the right blush/bronzer combination can make all the difference. The latest and greatest from Charlotte Ronson puts the two together in one stick and it is fabulous.
Charlotte’s “2 X A Charm” double-ended cream stick is perfect. One side is a cream blush, the other a cream bronzer. Both impart a sheer, natural wash of color onto your cheeks. The color glides on effortlessly and blends very easily (I like to use my finger). The pigments used absorb and reflect light for a glowing effect. It comes in two shades, which are named after two of her friends. Abby Elliot (from SNL) is a bright azalea blush with a milk chocolate with gold shimmer bronzer and Mindy Kaling (The Office) is a soft, rosy blush with a toasted almond bronzer. Both are super pretty and flattering. And, think how easy it will be to throw in your purse or suitcase! This is a definitely a new love of mine.

Beach Hair

I love the look of beachy hair. There is something very effortless looking about it, although for most of us, it’s anything but. Curling irons often make the ends look bent, product can be heavy or drying, getting the waves to look just right can be down right difficult. But, I think I have found the perfect tools to master the look I so want.

Sarah Jessica Parker always has the perfect messy beach look

The first step is finding the right wave enhancer. I’ve already written about Oribe Apres Wave and Shine spray and I do use this every day. However, I have discovered another spray that is perfect for wet or moist hair. Charlotte Ronson “A Perfect Mess Beach Hair” has all the elements you want in a wave enhancer. Sprayed through hair, it gives the textured and tousled look of a girl who has spent the day at sea. Marine botanicals give hair bounce, flexibility, and long lasting hold, and adds a ton of shine. And the smell….I could wear it as perfume. It is beach in a can!

Designer Charlotte Ronson knows what she’s doing when it comes to creating the perfect beach hair.

The second step is finding the right tool. I am not fortunate enough to just air dry and go. My waves need a little help. Enter the curling iron, but not the iron we’ve all struggled with the past 3 decades. Gone are the clamps that can crimp the ends. Today’s tools are just a wand and all you have to do is wrap hair (vertically) around. Super easy and super fast. I really like Sultra’s “The Bombshell” 1″. It has Japanese Kyocera ceramic technology that mends and defends hair while you style. It gets super hot (they provide a glove) so it only takes 30 seconds per curl. And it has universal voltage for those who travel abroad.

Now, I’m not made out of money these days, so the price tag on the Sultra is a bit steep. I have found a great, affordable alternative that does an amazing job. Remington’s “TStudio Large Pearl Ceramic Professional Styling Wand” is super. It kind of tapers at the end so if you want a tighter curl you have the option. It, too, is ceramic (which is great for your hair) and heats to the salon standard of 410 degrees (it also comes with a glove). This means you’ll have easy, breezy, curls in no time!

available at Ulta

Big, loose waves-I love it!!
