Closet Chaos

I often dream of having a beautiful walk-in closet.



I mean, come on, who wouldn’t want one of these? Until that day happens, I have to make due with the office and guest bedroom closets.

You probably think after spending 22 years in retail, I have organized closets. Well, you’d be wrong! When you spend 9+ hours a day folding, hanging, and straightening, it’s the last thing you want to do at home. I keep them somewhat orderly, until lately. Oh my goodness, I finally took a good hard look at them and knew I needed to do some major re-organization. I’m going to walk you through a great way to organize your closet so it’s efficient for you. I have to say, I was amazed at some of the things I found!

Guest bedroom closet-what a mess!

The first thing I do is take everything out. You’d be amazed at what works it’s way in. Then I sort everything into piles-keep, donate, repair, sell, and throw out.

With all the keeps, organize into stacks-jeans, leggings, tees, tanks, ect. I also organize them by color and sleeve or pant lengths.

Workout wear is hard to fold. I put all mine in a basket that I can easily slide in and out of the closet.

All my scarves go into a clear container.

My vintage fur fedora has it’s own hat box!

I found this little drawered container at Target. It’s perfect for my bracelets.

My sweaters lay flat on these side shelves. You get less wrinkles if you can fold them flat.

The bottom shelf houses jewelry, belts, and hats. My basket of workout wear slides underneath.

The top shelves house things I don’t need every day. Purses and little extra goodies live here!

I hung my sweaters and jackets in this closet. Arrange by color and sleeve length so it’s easier to find what you’re looking for. I stacked my shoe boxes underneath. What a difference!

My office closet-yikes!

Finished product. The things I need on a daily basis are on the bottom shelf. All the hanging is arranged by style, sleeve length, and color. I used plastic bins for storage because I already had them. Target has some really nice storage options.

My donations!! You really need to take emotion out of the equation. Anything you haven’t worn in a year or aren’t willing to repair or tailor should go. We all have those outfits that hold memories. I have a few I store, but otherwise it all goes to someone who needs it more than I do.

My “sell” pile. These are all premium denim, so I will post them on craig’s list. Resale stores don’t offer enough $$.

Remember-keep emotion out of it and organize in a way that makes sense to you. I know to keep things I wear often down low or else it gets too messy. Happy organizing!!
