Denim Jacket 2012

Just when I think denim jackets are over, someone styles it in such a fabulous way that I need to pull mine out again. Jenna Lyons, the powerhouse behind J. Crew ( and one of my idols) sported a denim jacket and skirt to the Met Gala recently and I’m in love. She is so fantastic and one of the best stylists out there. Take a look-

20120603-143146.jpg

20120603-143205.jpg
Jenna didn’t want to wear duchesse silk satin or anything with sparkles or pearls. She wanted her style to shine through. She had the denim jacket fit and re-tailored to raise the waist-band. She isn’t wearing a shirt underneath. Instead, she had custom cuffs and collar made and stitched into the jacket. So simple, yet so incredibly stylish and fabulous. And I love her pink heels!

20120603-143334.jpg
Inspired by Italian designer, Elsa Schiaparelli, Jenna sketched the skirt during a meeting (2 weeks before the ball). Honda, J. Crew’s pattern-maker, then draped and stitched the skirt right in her office.
Schiaparelli’s autobiography, “A Shocking Life”, is available on Amazon

20120603-191320.jpg
Jenna choose pink to go with Schiaparelli’s book. She also had a peplum sewn underneath the skirt because she wanted to articulate a silhouette she had seen on the pages of the autobiography.
For more on the story, please check out J. Crew’s blog.

Lyons isn’t the only celebrity that does the denim jacket right. Here’s a look at some other style mavens rocking their denim.

20120603-192000.jpg

I’ve always had a love/hate relationship with the denim jacket. Maybe it’s because I’ve just seen it worn incorrectly too many times or maybe it’s because I wore them in the eighties. But I have to admit it is the perfect layering piece for summer. It’s super cute dressed up or casual. 2012 has brought us some modern and edgy variations. Here are some of my favorites-

20120603-192417.jpg
Vintage Sea Blue Wash $100 available at J. Crew
The original version of Jenna’s

20120603-192623.jpg
J. Brand Denim Jacket $229 available at Neiman Marcus
I love the wash and the fit of this style.

20120603-192742.jpg
AG Adriano Goldschmied “Robyn” $198 available at Neiman Marcus
A classic looking denim jacket.

20120603-192907.jpg
Moto Aztec Burnout $90 available at Topshop
This has slight distressing and looks a little vintage.

20120603-193026.jpg
MNG by Mango $28 available at JCPenney
I do not condone wearing denim-on-denim by any means, but I do like the silhouette and price of this style.

20120603-193304.jpg
BDG Denim Trucker $69 available at Urban Outfitters
This style is a little over-sized and a little edgy.

There are oodles of choices out there. Just remember a few things-wash, cut, and wear. A fitted jacket is more chic, choose a wash that can be worn in many different situations (no tears or rips or bleach spots), and buy a silhouette you can wear often and comfortably. And please-no denim-on-denim. I know some celebs and designers show this look, but it’s just too much.

The Little White Dress

We all know how important the “little black dress” is. It’s the one article of clothing that will get you through any social event on your calendar. But now that it’s summer, maybe we should switch things up and try a “little WHITE dress”. Yes, the old rules dictate you should only wear white Memorial Day through Labor Day (and we are now in that time frame), however, I do believe the white dress can be worn all year long with the right accessories and other pieces in your closet. White is classic, crisp, and chic, and looks fabulous with a tan. Here are some celebrities rocking the LWD.

Every designer and retailer offers a LWD this time of year. Here are some of my favorites in stores now.

Romp(er) Into Summer

When I was a little girl, growing up in the seventies, rompers were a really big deal. Adults and children (of the female persuasion) could be seen enjoying summer in these super adorable one-piece items. Part short, part top, the only downside to the romper was dealing with the whole bathroom situation (you pretty much get naked every time you need to use the ladies). The romper can take you from day to night and all you have to do is change your shoes. I was so excited when they came back in style a couple of years ago, and am super happy that they are still in fashion. Here’s a look at some of my favorites on the market now.

20120502-144726.jpg
Asos Bloomer Playsuit in “Spot Print” $73 available at Asos
I really love this one because it is so reminiscent of the ones I wore as a girl.

20120502-144937.jpg
Dolan hoodie romper $97 available at Shop Bop
Perfect for a day at the beach! I like that it has a hood because it can get windy on the water.

20120502-145107.jpg
Dallin Chase Felix romper $62 available at Shop Bop
Orange really is THE color for summer and this is scrumptous!

20120502-145240.jpg
Stripe terry cloth romper $29.50 available at Delia’s
The pattern, the terry cloth, the romper-hello 70′s!

20120502-145356.jpg
Indah halter romper $95 available at Planet Blue
I love the print and color. It’s so soft and feminine.

20120502-145602.jpg
Sea Bud romper $49.50 available at Roxy
So simple and sweet.

20120502-145725.jpg
Pucker up romper $44.50 available at Roxy
I would wear this running errands and having lunch with the girls.

20120502-145845.jpg
Splendid signature terry romper $89 available at Shop Bop
This one has my favorite fabric for a romper-terry cloth!

20120502-150030.jpg
Triblend jersey romper $29.99 available at C&C California
Super casual and fun!

20120502-150236.jpg
Sparkle and Fade fringe romper $39.99 available at Urban Outfitters
Fabulous for a night on the town. Add a heel and your ready to “wow” everyone.

20120502-150423.jpg
Material Girl romper (sleeveless with lace cutouts) $29.99 available at Macy’s
Another perfect romper for a dressy night out. This one is more fitted and has nice detailing.

20120502-150603.jpg
Printed romper $49.50 available at Victoria’s Secret
Meow! This is super sexy and fabulous. You will definitely turn heads in this number.

Rompers are so playful and youthful. I totally dig them and will be rockin’ them all summer long.

Marvelous Maxis

Today is the first day of May (Happy May Day) and that means summer is almost here. 20120430-125311.jpg
Lattice back printed maxi $88 available at Express
This is more dressy and would be stunning at a summer wedding.

20120430-125441.jpg

Cat Eyes

I am addicted to sunglasses. Even on the cloudiest of days, I cannot leave home without them. I think blue eyes are extra sensitive to the sun. Choosing the right pair is essential, especially if you’re spending a lot of money. They are a major statement piece and it’s important to wear a pair that fits your style. A huge trend in frames this season is the Cat Eye. This silhouette has been around for decades, but comes and goes as far as trends are concerned. I’ve always been a huge fan! They are super glamorous and look great on almost everyone. Here’s a look at my top picks this season.

Get Covered Up(town)

If you lived in Minneapolis during the eighties/early nineties, then you remember the heyday of Uptown. Back then it was a combination of “Purple Rain” meets “Sid and Nancy” with a little “Pretty in Pink” thrown in. This was an area of Minneapolis that was gritty, edgy, and eclectic. It was burgers and bands at The Uptown Bar, used Levis at Urban Outfitters, punks (rockers, not trouble makers) hanging outside McDonald’s, malts at The Ediner, movies at Suburban World, and calamari at Figlio after my shift at Benetton. There was little in the way of chain shops and restaurants as uniqueness was key. It was where and who I wanted to be. But, as with most things, it faded away. Oh, it was still there and nothing had changed, but perhaps that was the problem. Gen X’ers were growing up and out of the Uptown area. And it was stagnate for a good decade.
Fast forward to the year 2012 and things have definitely changed. Uptown has been undergoing a revitalization over the past five or six years, and while the D.I.N.K. (double income, no kids) in me loves it, the eighties teen in me longs for the way it used to be. Whatever I feel about it, there’s no denying this has been a much needed financial injection for the area. Gone is The Uptown Bar (where you could always find a famous person having a beer) and in it’s place an Apple store. Urban Outfitters has gone mainstream and Calhoun Square now houses a huge Lifetime Fitness. There’s a Columbia and North Face store right next to each other…absolutely NOT what Uptown used to stand for. But I guess this is the face of a new generation and I’d better get used to it.

There is one new addition in the neighborhood that I can really get behind. Covered Uptown is an amazing boutique that is locally owned and operated and appeals to both sides of my personality. Located on Lagoon, it’s in my old neighborhood and right next door to Core Power Yoga. It’s a very up and coming section of Uptown. New apartments and retail seem to pop up every day. And if you’re in the retail industry, this is a very good thing.

20120303-161125.jpg
Covered Uptown has done an fabulous job of blending the old and the new. The shop is very visually appealing, has a homey feel, and you always feel very welcome. And the reason for this is Covered owner Stacy and her gals, Megan and Bridget. Not only are they fun and beautiful, they are super knowledgable about the product they carry and the world of fashion. They are very talented stylists and can help you find exactly what you’re looking for (and things you never even knew you needed). The boutique carries what I consider to be premium brands-Seven, Current Elliot, Wildfox, Dolce Vita, Ella Moss (just to name a few)-and some really unique pieces as well. And to keep it interesting, they offer events such as private shopping parties, spray tan and brow wax events, and on occasion break out the champagne. If you’re looking for a gorgeous, style filled boutique with the old Uptown vibe, I suggest you run to Covered Uptown. It’s a “no pressure” zone, just lots of fun. You’ll be very glad you did.

Covered Uptown is located at 1201 Lagoon Ave
Hours are Mon~Fri 11-8, Saturday 11-7, and Sunday 12-5

Long Cardigans J’Adore

I adore long cardigans! They have been a signature piece in my wardrobe for at least ten years. They are super cozy and keep me warm all winter long, and they can double as a jacket in the spring and fall. I live in them most of the year. They work with almost everything, but I especially love them with leggings and boots. I’m always asked where I get them, so I put together a little collection featuring some of my favorite, most affordable sweaters this season. Enjoy!

All That Glitters

In my recent excursion around the malls, one thing became crystal clear-sequins are the go-to trend for the holidays. Every store I went into was super shiny and sparkly. The great thing about sequins is that you can wear them for a dressy evening or to spice up a casual outfit. I love the look of a sequin top with jeans or a sparkly skirt with a tank and motorcycle boots. Here are some of my favorite pieces for the holiday season.

20111017-125814.jpg
Manhattan Hat Company Hat, Urban Outfitters Fisherman Cardigan, Metropark Cashmere Sweater, Express Stella Slim Fit Flare jeans, Aerosoles boots

I threw this outfit on this morning to run errands at Ridgedale. Didn’t put any thought into it, had barely any makeup on, yet I was stopped repeatedly by compliments on how I looked and my style. I swear, a lot of times it’s when I put the least amount of effort in that I get the most positive feedback. So, I thought I’d share it with you, along with other great fall casual looks.

What’s New at MOA

I haven’t been to the Mall of America since my store closed 5 months ago. After spending 6 years there, I needed a break! Yesterday, I decided it had been long enough and went to see what was new at MOA.

20111014-100840.jpg
H&M Sweater, Rock and Republic jeggings, Staccato boots, Chanel sunglasses, Rebecca Minkoff bag, Metropark jewelry(all purchased through the years at MOA)

The right bracelet makes all the difference

My first stop was the new store Superdry. Superdry is a very popular mens and womens retailer in Europe and is now making it’s way Stateside. The Mall of America location is one of nine in the States and the only one in the midwest. The store manager, Shannon, is one of the best when it comes to customer service and her staff is equally as passionate as she is. Superdry is a mix of preppy and trend, and their jacket collection is just what we need in Minnesota.

My second stop was the new Michael Kors store. Beautiful, and I love their watches. This is my latest desire-

I can always find something at Urban Outfitters! I just love the store manager, Sydney. She has the best energy and it is infectious. Urban has a little bit of everything and is like a treasure hunt. Love this jacket-

Silence the Noise Fur Zip Jacket $89

I really found my heart’s desire at H&M. I find this store very hit or miss, but they have some great fall items now. I think it’s no secret I have a love for faux-fur and this jacket is the one!!

20111014-105007.jpg
Faux Fur Jacket $69.95

A little info from a birdie-MOA will be opening at midnight Black Friday. Don’t know if it’s rumor or not, but if you love the craziness and early bird shopping, I’d keep my eyes open for an upcoming announcement. So glad I don’t work there anymore-I could not do a midnight shift!!
