Workout Gear That Will Get You Moving

Let’s face it, we all need to work out. I’s just the way it is. There are some days when I hate every minute of it, but I feel so happy afterwards. And yes, you get hot, sweaty, stinky…but that doesn’t mean you can’t look great doing it. Workout wear has taken on a life of it’s own (and one of the few categories that hasn’t suffered because of the economy). There are boutiques devoted to nothing but fitness and exercise apparel and equipment. Yes, they might be more expensive than big box retailers, but in my opinion the merchandise is well worth it. Not only is the fabric better, but so is the fit and the design. And it’s so cute you can wear it even when you’re not working out. Luluemon is one of these boutiques and I have fallen in love. You get fabulous service from knowledgable staff, plus they offer in-store classes and run clubs, just to name a few extras. Here are my picks for summer. After all, working out is much easier if I’m happy with my outfit!

Deep Breathe Bra $48
One of the biggest issues I had with buying sports bras at the big box retailers is that they didn’t offer very good support. While my girls aren’t huge, they’re big enough (and old enough) to need support. This bra is great. It offers medium support and coverage, mainly due to the cross front and racerback. It also has removable cups which I love.

20120510-133512.jpg
Pranayama Bra $48
This is perfect for low-impact like yoga. The support and coverage are low so if you have “girls” this may not be for you. The cross front always your skin to breathe and keeps the tatas separate. Also comes with removable cups.

20120510-133745.jpg
Dhanursana Crop $78
These crops are super soft and comfortable. The bound hem keeps the crops in place, while the waistband has a hidden pocket for keys and cards.

20120510-133934.jpg
Strength and Tone Short $48
Lightweight and ideal for hot yoga or running. The anti-stink mesh liner ensures you goodies stay hidden. It has a cinch-able drawcord so you can adjust the fit and the fold-over waist band hides the drawcord. They also have front hip pockets.

20120510-134224.jpg
Tame Me Tank $52
This is great. The cut of the top is designed to fit over a full-coverage bra. It is made from Luxtreme and Silverescent fabrics which are moisture-wicking. And the cinch-able drawcord hem keeps the tank from riding up (I hate that).

20120510-134440.jpg
In the Sun Dress $98
A dress designed for runners! The perforated panels are cute and allows skin to breathe while the four-way stretch lets you move in all directions. It also has reflective details so you are not invisible at night. And it’s cute enough to wear out and about too.

20120510-134705.jpg

20120510-134715.jpg
Flow and Go Tote $128
This is the ideal bag for any girl that spends time at class. It can be worn as a messenger or tote and has tons of room. There’s a mesh pocket for sweaty clothes, front pockets to stow your shoes, and a back pocket that is roomy enough for a laptop. Drawcords keep everything in place and the side bottom zippers open so you can store your yoga mat. This tote is also a fabulous carry-on bag.

All items are available at Lululemon

As for my personal workout update, I am down 7 pounds! I have worked out every day for 25 days and have been at my calorie goal every day. I’m super excited because I am starting to see some real changes in my body, and that makes me happy inside and out!

Pop Your Physique

Last Friday I did a post about barre workouts and today I’m going to introduce you to another amazing DVD collection. As you know, barre is my workout of choice, and this system is hardcore.
Created by former ballet dancer Jennifer Williams, Pop Physique incorporates a ballet barre inspired exercise system into an efficient class set to excellent music. It blends elements of ballet, pilates and light weight work into a methodical series of strengthening, isometrics, core shaping, and fabulous stretches. It’s an ideal workout for anyone who wants the body of a dancer. And believe me, you will feel muscles that you never knew you had. You can expect improved posture, increased ab strength and tone, and an overall increased body awareness.

20120503-121347.jpg
If you’d love to look like this, keep reading!

So, Pop Physique claims that even their 40 minute DVD will burn 500 calories. I contacted them for clarification because I am tracking all my food and exercise and need to be sure how many calories I am actually burning. This is what they said. “Yes, you can definitely burn 500 calories if you’re doing the workout fully and properly (i.e. not skipping over exercises or only doing them partially, ect.). The reason for this is that Pop Physique is based on isometric exercise which are the tiny repetitious movements you see in our class and on the DVD. This type of exercise fatigues the muscles (the great shaking that happens) and burns calories from the inside out. You can access the deepest parts of the muscles this way and you continue to burn calories even after the workout is over.” Okay, excellent. I have no problem completing the workouts (except for maybe some of the abs-ouch!) and I am very aware of my posture and positioning. Looks like I’m in good shape for burning those 500 calories.

Pop Physique has three DVDs that are all challenging, super fun, and leave me feeling spent but energized. The instructors are adorable (love their 80′s “Let’s Get Physical” workout gear) and very informative. They continually remind you about posture and give very clear instructions on each exercise. They are motivating and know the sections people might give up on (“you better not be laying on the floor watching this) and that really keeps me going. They, too, are shaking and sweating, and tell you quite often to just close your eyes and ride it out. I can appreciate that. There’s nothing worse than doing a DVD where the instructor is not in pain with you! Here’s a breakdown of each DVDs.

20120503-124139.jpg
Original Butt (55 minutes)
With this DVD yo will tone and sculpt the entire body in a fun, intense workout with zero impact on joints. You will strengthen and stretch your entire muscle group (stretching is super important) and you will shake. Don’t be afraid of the shake, it just means your body is changing. You will see quick results-a lifted, rounded butt, sleek arms, flat abs, and slimed legs.

20120503-124522.jpg
Hardcore (65 minutes)
This gives you intense strengthening that make muscles heat up and shake from being worked so hard. You will focus on shaping each muscle group and speed up your metabolism with isometric muscle work. For sure this is the hardest one, but still doable for anyone (if I can do it, you can do it).

20120503-124843.jpg
Cardio Butt School (39 minutes)
With this workout you will take what you were given and perfect it. The cardio level is higher and flows from one muscle group to the next, allowing you to get all your toning done in a shorter period of time. Perfect for when you can’t commit to a full hour.

DVDs are available exclusively at Amazon. I purchased them as a complete set for $29.95, but you can purchase them separately for $15.95. Something good to know, all three have a 5 star rating on Amazon, which would explain why it appears they are currently sold out!

So, why do I love Pop Physique versus other brands of barre workouts? Like the Tracey Mallett DVD I featured last week, there is more ballet incorporated into them and I love that. This doesn’t mean you have to have any ballet knowledge, but I love the phrases and positions (arabesque, pliĆ©, first position, ect.) and I adore working at a ballet barre. Now, they use chairs in the DVDs, so that’s all you need along with some light weights. The instructors are fabulous, the music is not annoying, and best of all I have seen results. For those of you that know me, you know I have never had a butt (and what I do have sags). Flat butt-that was me. Now, after three weeks of working out, I am starting to see changes, especially in the booty region. Even my husband commented that my tush looked amazing in my yoga pants.

20120503-133335.jpg
Booty is lifting, now I just need to flatten those abs!

I have worked out 19 days in a row (hills on treadmill and barre)-a lifetime record for me! I have been under my calorie count every day, lost 6 pounds, and 2 inches off both my waist and my hips. But most importantly, I feel better. I know I’m eating better and am doing something really good for myself. And that makes all the shaking worth it!

P.S. If you’re looking for a local studio that offers barre classes, check out my blog post “Belly Up to the Barre” from last Friday.

Nip+Fab Lands Stateside At Target

It’s here, it’s here, it’s finally here! The U.K.’s best selling skincare phenomenon, Nip+Fab, is now stateside at select Target stores. Created by celebrity skin care specialist (and the brains behind the much more expensive line Rodial), this skincare collection targets every issue women face. This clinically tested line of products contains miracle workers that brighten, plump, and smooth skin, and covers problems from cellulite to dark spots to frown lines. I seriously ran to Target yesterday. I started with three products, which I will review once I’ve had some time to use them, but I know I will be going back for more.

20120405-122657.jpg
Frown Fix $9.95
This product is a wrinkle and expression line filler. It comes with a neat brush so you just click and swipe it over all those lines you want filled.

20120405-122830.jpg
Pigmentation Fix $15.95
This reduces age and sun spots, and corrects uneven skin tone. While I’ve been extremely happy with Estee Lauder’s Idealist, this has a much more beautiful price tag (Idealist is $85 a bottle).

20120405-123042.jpg
No Needle Fix $19.99
This claims to be an injection of youth with no needle needed. It fills wrinkles within 30 minutes and after after 28 days deep wrinkles are diminished by almost 16%.

Today is my first day with these three products and I can tell you this much-they are all non-greasy and feel amazing on my skin. I put the Frown Fix on my crows feet and they are much softer looking and my concealer did not settle into them. I could actually feel the No Needle Fix working-my skin immediately felt tighter, but not in a bad way. I just know this is going to be my new favorite line!

Maria Hatzistefanis, creator of Nip+Fab
please visit Nip+Fab for more information.

Nip+Fab is available on-line and at select Target stores. Some in the Minneapolis area are Edina, Knollwood, St. Louis Park, Eden Prairie, Bloomington, Chaska, and Mankato. I suggest downloading the Target app. It gives you the product and whether it’s on-line or in-store. I could then choose the store, the product, and it would tell me exactly what aisle to go to (it was a little hard to find).

Radiant Skin In A Pad

I’m all about glowing skin, but for me it’s a fine line between glow and a greasy shine. I’ve tried so many products that promise radiance and luminosity, but have often been left disappointed. Then I tried Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Intensive Glow Pads Brightening Treatment. At first I was not a fan. They solution is a little sticky and I didn’t notice any change. But I stuck with it and am so glad I did. These pads are a targeted treatment that brightens and renews your skin, delivering superb luminosity. They bring back your natural radiance and improve skin tone and texture. How, you ask? Powered by Activesoil Complex and infused with potent vitamins and minerals, cell turnover is increased letting the real you shine through. The sixty pads are double-sided. Use the smooth side daily and the textured side when you need a more intense experience. I use them at night in lieu of toner and just apply in a circular motion. Like I said, they are a bit sticky, but once dry (seconds really) you don’t notice it. There is no retinol, so for those of you that find retinoids too intense, this is a great alternative.

Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Intensive Glow Pads Brightening Treatment $35 for 60
available at all Bare Escentuals locations, as well as Sephora, Ulta, and all major department stores.

PS. For those of you interested in Sephora’s Lip Reveal, it is available in stores now!

Miracle Worker

I have definitely reached the age where deep wrinkles are starting to appear. I can blame genetics (my dad had deep forehead wrinkles) but my dermatologist tells me the main reason for them is that I talk with my face. In other words, I’m very expressive. That’s fine and dandy, but I still don’t like it. There are so many products that claim to erase wrinkles, it’s hard to know what to try. One line I have seen success with is Philosophy’s Miracle Worker. I totally dig the retinoid pads, but only recently tried the eye cream and moisturizer. Philosophy has put together a set that contains all the products and it’s a great value.
The Philosophy Miracle Worker Set contains their best anti-aging products. They feature retinoids, which are proven to diminish the appearance of deep wrinkles. Used together, these products improve the elasticity and firmness of your skin and renew your skin tone and texture. The set consists of Miraculous Anti-Aging Eye Cream and moisturizer, and Miracle Worker Anti-Aging Retinoid Solution and pads. It is also appropriate for all skin types. My deep wrinkles have not disappeared, but they certainly do look better. And in my opinion, every little bit helps.

Philosophy Miracle Worker Set $119 ($185 value)

This set is exclusive to Sephora (I know, I shop there way too much) and is a limited edition. Don’t let this one pass you by.

Waddle Repair

Remember Ally McBeal? There were two characters-Richard and Whipper-and he was most attracted to her “waddle”. In other words, her loose neck skin. At the time, I was a mere youngin’ of the late twenty/early thirties range, and could not relate to this at all. Well, the times, they are a’changin my friends. I feel there are two things that truly give away my age-my eyes (years spent squinting) and the lines on my neck. Yuck and yuck! It really never occurred to me that all these years I should have been protecting my neck. In my search for a neck cream, I came across one from L’Oreal. So far, so good.
L’Oreal’s Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Golden Balm for Face/Neck/Chest is really good. It’s a thick, rich, and delicious smelling balm that deeply nourishes thin, delicate skin with calcium + ten precious oils. It immediately penetrates deep below the skin’s surface, locking in 24 hour hydration. The elasticity is improved for more toned, firmer, and younger looking skin. It’s thick-really thick-but not at all greasy. It soaks in very quickly. And after using it for a couple of months, I can see a difference. Even some of the finer lines have disappeared. I don’t need to use it on my face (yet) but my chest is starting to need a little help too. Good thing this balm covers all the bases.

L’Oreal Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Golden Balm $19.99
available at all major drugstores
