Workout Gear That Will Get You Moving

Let’s face it, we all need to work out. I’s just the way it is. There are some days when I hate every minute of it, but I feel so happy afterwards. And yes, you get hot, sweaty, stinky…but that doesn’t mean you can’t look great doing it. Workout wear has taken on a life of it’s own (and one of the few categories that hasn’t suffered because of the economy). There are boutiques devoted to nothing but fitness and exercise apparel and equipment. Yes, they might be more expensive than big box retailers, but in my opinion the merchandise is well worth it. Not only is the fabric better, but so is the fit and the design. And it’s so cute you can wear it even when you’re not working out. Luluemon is one of these boutiques and I have fallen in love. You get fabulous service from knowledgable staff, plus they offer in-store classes and run clubs, just to name a few extras. Here are my picks for summer. After all, working out is much easier if I’m happy with my outfit!

Deep Breathe Bra $48
One of the biggest issues I had with buying sports bras at the big box retailers is that they didn’t offer very good support. While my girls aren’t huge, they’re big enough (and old enough) to need support. This bra is great. It offers medium support and coverage, mainly due to the cross front and racerback. It also has removable cups which I love.

20120510-133512.jpg
Pranayama Bra $48
This is perfect for low-impact like yoga. The support and coverage are low so if you have “girls” this may not be for you. The cross front always your skin to breathe and keeps the tatas separate. Also comes with removable cups.

20120510-133745.jpg
Dhanursana Crop $78
These crops are super soft and comfortable. The bound hem keeps the crops in place, while the waistband has a hidden pocket for keys and cards.

20120510-133934.jpg
Strength and Tone Short $48
Lightweight and ideal for hot yoga or running. The anti-stink mesh liner ensures you goodies stay hidden. It has a cinch-able drawcord so you can adjust the fit and the fold-over waist band hides the drawcord. They also have front hip pockets.

20120510-134224.jpg
Tame Me Tank $52
This is great. The cut of the top is designed to fit over a full-coverage bra. It is made from Luxtreme and Silverescent fabrics which are moisture-wicking. And the cinch-able drawcord hem keeps the tank from riding up (I hate that).

20120510-134440.jpg
In the Sun Dress $98
A dress designed for runners! The perforated panels are cute and allows skin to breathe while the four-way stretch lets you move in all directions. It also has reflective details so you are not invisible at night. And it’s cute enough to wear out and about too.

20120510-134705.jpg

20120510-134715.jpg
Flow and Go Tote $128
This is the ideal bag for any girl that spends time at class. It can be worn as a messenger or tote and has tons of room. There’s a mesh pocket for sweaty clothes, front pockets to stow your shoes, and a back pocket that is roomy enough for a laptop. Drawcords keep everything in place and the side bottom zippers open so you can store your yoga mat. This tote is also a fabulous carry-on bag.

All items are available at Lululemon

As for my personal workout update, I am down 7 pounds! I have worked out every day for 25 days and have been at my calorie goal every day. I’m super excited because I am starting to see some real changes in my body, and that makes me happy inside and out!

Belly Up To The Barre

Regardless of how you felt about “Black Swan” (I loved it), there’s no denying the fact that it sparked a workout revolution. Woman all over the world were suddenly flocking to ballet studios in order to achieve a dancer’s body, and the phenomenon that is the “barre workout” was born. Barre workouts actually go back over three decades when Lotte Berk created her method, but in recent years they’ve taken on a whole new persona.
So, what exactly is a barre workout? It is a combination of ballet, yoga, and pilates with bursts of cardio thrown in. You will firm, tighten, tone, and streamline your physique without adding bulk. The workout incorporates the use of a ballet barre (or chair) for support and resistance, light arm weights, and depending on the studio, balls and resistance bands. The results are amazing-narrow waistline, lifted butt, lean thighs, and sculpted arms-a dancer’s body.
But let me be clear-this is NOT an easy workout. You will feel muscles you never knew existed. Your legs will shake like jello and just when you think your done with a move, the instructor will cry out to “give me one more inch” and the count begins again. You will be sore, you will want to give up. I know because I did give up, but not any longer. I am so committed to barre workouts that it is all I think about. I am determined to have that dancer’s body in time for my 25 year high school reunion this summer (I know, I’m old). Lucky for me, there are more and more barre studios opening in Minneapolis and the amount of dvds is staggering. I’m going to introduce you to some of the studios in the metro area and one of my favorite dvds.

Align Pilates 3021 Holmes Ave. S. Minneapolis

This is the one studio I have actually been to. I purchased a Groupon last summer that entitled me to 4 barre classes at Align. It’s a beautiful studio located in the heart of Uptown. I expected more of a ballet class, but what I got was a heart pumping, leg shaking, muscle burning 60 minutes of the most intense exercise I had ever experienced. From the first beat of music (which is awesome-can you say Florence and the Machines?), we were moving and sweating and grimacing. Co-owner Adrienne Fitzmaurice put us through the paces and was both encouraging and tough. She motivates you and inspires you, all while correcting posture (very important) and pushing everyone to give more. I left there exhausted but with a smile on my face. I scheduled a private session with her to make sure I was doing everything correctly and she was fantastic. After my four sessions were up I had to quit going (no job), but boy did I miss it.
Align offers several barre classes as well as pilates and yoga. This May they will have a six week Barre Basics class, which is perfect for the barre newbie. You’ll learn all about barre and how to perform each move effectively. In July they will offer a weekend-long barre teacher training (my dream) for those interested in taking things to the next level. Scheduling can be done on-line, and believe me-those barre classes fill up fast!

The Barre 539 Lake St. E. Wayzata

This studio overlooks Lake Minnetonka and features beginner and more intense classes. They also offer childcare, which is perfect for mommies.
For more information, please visit The Barre

20120426-123336.jpg
Balanced Barre and Pilates 240 Minnetonka Ave. S. Wayzata

Also located in Wayzata, this studio features the Barre Amped method, which you can also find on DVD.
For more information, please visit Balanced Barre and Pilates

20120426-123621.jpg
Pure Barre 5620A W. 36th St. St. Louis Park

Pure Barre is probably one of the most recognizable studios in the country and they have finally come to Minnesota. Newly opened in St. Louis Park, classes are filling up quickly. You can also find a huge collection of Pure Barre dvds.
For more information, please visit Pure Barre Minneapolis

20120426-124130.jpg
Barre Bliss 2920 Bryant Ave. S. Minneapolis

Also located in Uptown, this studio focuses on barre and yoga, as well as family classes. Childcare is an added bonus. They, too, will be offering teacher training in June.
For more information, please visit Barre Bliss

For those of you that don’t have access to a barre studio or can’t handle the price tag (classes usually start at $20 an hour, but packages are available), there are oodles of dvds out there. I have purchased and tried almost every brand out there, but one of my favorites is Tracey Mallett’s Booty Barre Total Body.

20120426-124615.jpg
Total Body $15.99 available at Tracey Mallett or Amazon

The main reason I love this DVD is because it utilizes the ballet barre more than most, and that’s my favorite part (not to mention my barre is heavy and if I drag it out, I’d better use it). Tracey is an international fitness and wellness expert, dancer, choreographer, and a master pilates instructor (so she knows her stuff). This perky Aussie is fun to watch, very clear on her instruction, and motivates you to keep going. Another thing I love is that all you need is a chair and some light arm weights. She has someone doing modifications, which are easy to follow, and the girls all have different body types.

The girls from Total Body

I really love this dvd and while it’s hard, it’s also really fun! Tracey has many, many different videos, so no matter what kind of exercise you like, there’s one for you.

I hope this has given you some insight into the world of barre workouts and has inspired you to give it a try. The results can be outstanding, as long as you stick with it. I can tell you I’m down 5 pounds in one week from walking and doing barre, as well as really paying attention to calories in and calories out. I can’t wait to see where I’m at next Friday!

Thicker Hair With Invati

I have fine hair that seems to be thinning as I get older. My biggest beauty fear is losing my hair, and finding a handful in the shower drain can be very depressing. So when Aveda unveiled their new Invati line I was very intrigued. This three piece collection claims to reduce hair loss and improve and thicken thinning hair. I was hesitant. It is not the cheapest collection and I was very skeptical. But, I forked over the money and was on my way to being a guinea pig.
Here are the vitals. Invati means “invigorate”. Formulated with the power of Densiplex (an invigorating blend of ayurvedic herbs such as turmeric and ginseng), the Invati line basically claims to help you keep the hair you have longer. It does this by using the densiplex to energize and rehabilitate the scalp. A healthier scalp equals healthier hair. It also restores strength and elasticity which reduces breakage. Here’s a breakdown of each product.

20120225-151530.jpg
Invati Exfoliating Shampoo $24
This shampoo cleanses, exfoliates, and renews the scalp. It is clinically proven to remove build-up of sebum and product residue.

20120225-151832.jpg
Invati Thickening Conditioner $24
This conditioner is clinically proven to restore strength and improve hair elasticity, reducing breakage. It thickens hair with a blend of guar, palm, and rapeseed-derived ingredients.

20120225-152035.jpg
Invati Scalp Revitalizer $60
This helps energize and rehabilitate the scalp around follicles when massaged in (8 sprays on each side of head, massage in. I do this in the am and the pm. It doesn’t make hair feel dirty). This spray creates the optimum environment for healthy hair.

Okay, so how do I really like it? Love the conditioner and the scalp revitalizer. The only reason I’m not crazy about the shampoo is because it doesn’t lather, but my hair does get clean. I can say in all honesty that I have seen a huge drop in the amount of hair in the drain. Because I don’t wash my hair every day, there would be a good amount of hair left in the shower. Now, there are days I don’t even have to clean the hair trap. My hair does look and feel thicker, especially on the days I wash my hair. Usually, after rinsing the conditioner out of my hair, my hair felt pretty thin. Now, it’s noticeably thicker when wet and you can feel it “thickening” when rinsing out the conditioner. I’ve been using it about a month and I do have to give it “two thumbs up”. It is worth the price tag if you suffer from thin hair. I will suggest shopping around. I’ve found salons that offer a discount if you buy all three items, which I recommend. It is truly a “system” and for optimal results you need to use all the products.

Please visit Aveda to order or find salons near you.

Primed Lashes

My Grandma was recently very intrigued by my eyelashes and how long they are. I’ve shared many of my secrets, but only briefly mentioned the true key to outrageous lashes. I’ve learned, through many trials and errors, that there is not (for me) one quick fix product. It’s a combination of several amazing items that give me long, thick, and curled lashes. I am lucky, my lashes have always been long and I’ve never used a curler, but I’ve discovered that by using a few key tools, my lashes are taken to the next level. I’ve posted about the Urban Decay growth product I use at night and I’ve written about the mascaras I use, but the one that makes the biggest impact is a lash primer.
Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum and Primer is THE key to perfect fringe. I’ve used it for years and there is nothing that works better. My lashes look good when I just use mascara, but paired with this primer that are amazing. This maximizer combs, curls, and thickens each lash to create a smooth, even mascara base. The nourishing serum treatment promotes long-term growth, plus lash strength and vitality. You just apply it to lashes prior to mascara and voila! You will have plumper, longer and fabulous lashes. It can also be used at night to condition. I would never wear just mascara because the difference is that great. It is spendy, but it does last a long time (I know you’re supposed to throw out eye stuff after a few months, but as long as it isn’t dry I’ll use it). I promise you will not be disappointed!

Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum and Primer $28

Hunger Games Nail Polish

If you’re a fan of the “Hunger Games” trilogy, you’re going to want to check out the new nail polish from China Glaze. Their “Colors of the Capital” collection is inspired by the districts of Panem and each hue represents the main resource of said district. The colors are as unique as the characters in the books. And if you haven’t read the books, these nail polishes will definitely peak your interest.
A little bit about China Glaze polish. It’s formulated with China clay, which is a superb nail hardener (it’s what gives porcelain it’s shiny finish). They give your nails lasting strength, durability, and an overall gorgeous appearance. And, their colors are always amazing.

20120129-161132.jpg
One of my favorites, “Electrify” is inspired by district 5 (and Katiniss’ dress)

20120129-161227.jpg
My other favorite, “Smoke and Ashes” is reflective of the coal mining industry of district 12

20120129-161430.jpg
All twelve shades will be available in March
China Glaze can be found at Ulta for around $7.

Even if you aren’t a fan of the trilogy, you’ll absolutely be a fan of these polishes!
