Summer Lovin’

It’s a scorcher out there today! I have “Happy Hour” plans with some life-long friends tonight and it’s hard to plan an outfit in this humidity. Shorts are a must, but I always get cold in the air conditioning. I pulled out my “look book” for some inspiration.

20120618-152825.jpg
I adore this look. Oversized denim shorts are great because they allow air to circulate. A light-weight three quarter sleeve top is a wonderful option because it will keep my arms warm. I like an over-sized bag because I can throw a cardigan in there in case of a chill. Add the right jewelry and a gladiator sandal and you have the perfect look for an summer evening.

20120618-155357.jpg
A sheer coral blouse is gorgeous against a tan, and can keep you cool too. Super short cut-offs paired with a belt are the perfect compliment to a flowy top. Simple but edgy jewelry pulls it all together. No shoes are shown, but I think a wedge would be the ultimate choice for this ensemble.

Dressing can be tricky in the summer because weather can change in a flash and you never know who’s going to have air conditioning. That’s why I always make sure I have a layering piece with my when sporting short sleeves. Denim shorts can easily be dressed up with the right accessories and shoes, as can most tops. The most important thing is to have fun and stay cool!

Fashion’s New Shining Star

I really enjoyed watching NBC’s “Fashion Star”. The concept was fabulous! It was really educational to hear the feedback from the mentors (Nicole Richie, Jessica Simpson, and John Varvatos) and the buyers for Macy’s, Saks Fifth Avenue, and H&M. Anyone who’s thinking of becoming a designer could certainly learn a lot from this show. And how fun is it to see the designs and be able to purchase them the next day? In the end, it was former 4th grade teacher, Kara Laricks, that took home the big prize. She got off to a rocky start, but overall was consistent yet constantly evolving. Her collection stays true to her passion for menswear, but will appeal to the masses. And now you can purchase her line at Macy’s.

This shift has a sleek, modern shape with quirky menswear-inspired details. And the printed lining is a whimsical touch.

20120516-185218.jpg
Amanda Blouse $69 and Michael Shorts $59
Fabulous together but versatile enough to pair with other pieces, this tie-neck blouse and flat-front crepe shorts are sophisticated yet playful.

20120516-185407.jpg
Sleeveless Ted Ankle Length Jumpsuit $89
I love a good jumpsuit and this one is a winner. With it’s menswear-inspired details and streamlined shape, it’s fresh and modern.

20120516-185637.jpg
Sleeveless Cha Cha Romper $79
Adorable romper that has more of a tailored feel. The belt adds contrast and gives the romper a feminine touch.

20120516-185838.jpg
Sleeveless Caprice Tuxedo Shift $79
This tuxedo-inspired shift has a chic fit with modern lines. This piece can easily transition from work to play.

All items available at Macy’s

It’s easy to see why Kara was crowned the new fashion star. I’m really excited to see where her career goes from here. I have a feeling we’ll be hearing and seeing a lot more of Kara!

Cut-Off Denim (Never Goes Out Of Style)

I’ve worn cut-off denim since I was a little girl in the 70′s. I usually prefer vintage Levis, but there are many, many other brands that offer the retro look with modern day appeal. So, what’s the allure of the cut-off? In my opinion, they are super versatile and super sexy. There’s something about a girl with a pair of low-slung cut-offs. It captures the all-American feel. She’s got tan gams, radiant skin, and beach worthy hair. And probably flip-flops on her feet (at least that’s how I picture it). The one thing I know for sure-these iconic beauties will never go out of style. Here’s a look at some new versions that are very bit as sassy as the vintage offerings.

The All-American cut-off girl. Mary Kate wears Wrangler and Ashley is in Levis.

Cut-off denim shorts $22.94 available at Old Navy
I love the cute pockets on these.

20120512-105906.jpg
Destroyed denim midi short $29.99 available at American Eagle
Cut-offs should have a certain amount of destruction. You don’t want them to look brand new.

20120512-110026.jpg
Textile Elizabeth and James Peeking Pocket short $165 available at Amazon
I adore these. They look like they’ve been worn for years. But be aware-they are super short.

20120512-110210.jpg
Juicy Couture Vintage denim $98 available at Piperlime
The fading and whiskering are in just the right places.

20120512-110346.jpg
Mek Nexus shorts $79 available at Zappos
A little longer for those who want more coverage.

20120512-110458.jpg
Rich and Skinny Venice striped cut-off $103 available at Madison LA
These are a fun and playful alternative to regular denim. They scream ’60′s surf!

20120512-110635.jpg
Lucky Brand Riley $69.50 available at Zappos
Slightly longer but very vintage looking.

20120512-110746.jpg
501 Worn cut-off $58 available at Levis
White denim is a huge trend for summer and you can’t go wrong with 501′s. They are the original!

20120512-110907.jpg
True Religion Joey $174 available at Zappos
Joey’s are known for making every bootie look fabulous. And the wash is great too.

20120512-111024.jpg
Siwy Camilla (as seen on Megan Fox) $158 available at Singer 22
These are a favorite of the celebrity set. They are super short and super sexy.

Celebs love their cut-off denim. Take a look at these fashionistas putting their signature on the iconic style.

Giselle adds a big belt.

20120512-193718.jpg
Victoria Beckham makes a very rare “casual” appearance.

Megan Fox rocks her Siwys again!

20120512-194019.jpg
Nicole Richie does a more boho look.

Alexa Chung makes the look her own.

20120512-195737.jpg
Me (standing) and a friend, circa 1995. I’m wearing vintage men’s 501′s that I cut off.

It’s not hard to see why I love cut-off denim. They are a timeless classic, and I have to admit, I feel younger when I don a pair.

The Webster Comes To Target

Today Target launches it’s latest retail concept, “The Shops at Target”. This new concept features limited-edition collections from popular boutiques across the United States (including one of my favorite beauty stores, The Cos Bar). On the fashion front, Target has partnered with the upscale Miami boutique, The Webster. Co-designed by The Webster owner Laurie Heriard Dubreuil and Target, this collection is made up of amazing pieces that have that South Beach vibe. Tropical-printed dresses, short suits, and accessories are just the beginning. There are party and work appropriate sheaths, swimwear, wedges, and beach totes, as well as pajamas, hats, and many other goodies. While I don’t have exact pricing for each item, I can tell you that the line ranges from $8-$50. Not bad for fabulous items that have major summer appeal.

A great beachy look or perfect for lounging at home on a hot summer night.

Pretty and lightweight robe and chemise are essential for warm weather nights and mornings. Or you can go for a shorts option. Either way, you’ll be super sexy.

Holiday Looks By Zara

I spent the morning browsing through Zara’s holiday look book-wow! There are some really fabulous looks with pieces you can work into your every day life. And while there’s no Zara here in Minneapolis, they do offer free shipping (which is always a plus). Here are the looks I love the most!

20111129-104310.jpg
Bowed Shirt $39.90 with Metallic Thread Shorts $49.90
These shorts are great! I love the zippers and the texture.

20111129-104438.jpg
Fur Coat $99.90 with Extra Fine Jumper $59.90
I had to feature this fur coat-the color is amazing, and jumpers are a very hot trend for the holidays.

20111129-104609.jpg
Lace Top $39.90 with Sequin Shorts $49.90
This is a very glamorous look which may be too much for some. Each piece separately would still add sparkle to any outfit.

20111129-104818.jpg
Fur Coat $99.90 with Lace Top and Skinny Trouser with Piping $59.90
Here’s another option for the lace top. Paired with trousers and a fur coat it’s a perfect outfit for those holiday parties on cold winter nights.

20111129-105028.jpg
Combined Dress $59.90
I love this dress-it gives the illusion of being two pieces, but it’s one dress. You could really dress this up or make it more casual (maybe with a jean jacket and flip flops in the summer).

20111129-105230.jpg
Leather Jacket $159 and Tulle Skirt $59.90
I always love a good tulle skirt and paired with the leather jacket it becomes edgy instead of sweet.

For more great outfit ideas, check out the Zara look book. And remember-free shipping!
