Snow Glow

One of my all-time favorite movies is “Beautiful Girls”. The cast is great, the plot entertaining, but more than anything, I love how it truly captures how cold winters are in Minnesota. It reminds me of my hometown and why I still live here even when I’m a summer girl at heart.

The other thing I love about it is Uma Thurman’s character. She proves that a woman can still be sexy even when she’s dressed in layers and trades heels for Sorels. I think she is at her most beautiful in this movie. Her “natural” makeup gives her a “I just walked a mile in the cold and snow” glow and I have invested time and money in trying to re-create the look. And, I think I’ve finally mastered it! I spent the holiday weekend doing very “Minnesota” activities and had several local gals ask what makeup I use along the way.

Uma and her “snow glow”

Now, when you see how many products go into achieving this look, don’t be dismayed. It actually only takes me about 7 minutes to complete and many of you can probably eliminate some steps (I am not blessed with beautiful skin). Some products I have profiled before and some are new to my routine. Those are the ones I’ll focus the most on.

20130102-104424.jpg
First step is prep. I mix a little of Paula Dorf’s Jet Set Glow tinted moisturizer ($35) with Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse Beauty Balm ($34). Jet Set Glo adds a little more moisture and glow to the beauty balm. I first started using it in the nineties when I read it’s what the makeup artist for “Sex and the City” used on Sarah Jessica Parker. I’ve been a fan ever since. The beauty balm does a great job of covering, but if I have a certain blemish that needs a little help, I dot on Loreal’s Magic Lumi concealer ($12). I finish off with a dusting of Bare Mineral’s Ready powder foundation ($29). A little goes along way when it comes to this powder. It has great coverage and keeps the shine at bay. For those of you with perfect skin, you can totally skip this step!

20130102-110202.jpg
Next comes the color! I use Shiseido Lacquer Rouge RD501 Drama ($25) as a cheek stain (which I actually dot on my apples before powder). It’s not sticky and lasts all day. I follow that up with my all-time favorite bronzer, Too Faced Snow Bunny ($29). A swipe on the forehead, apples, nose, and chin gives a perfect winter bronze. And then it’s time for my new love, Stila’s Custom Color Blush in Self-Adjusting Coral ($20). This blush actually works with your PH so you get the perfect color for your skin. I apply to my apples with a very light hand, as it has ample pigments. My cheeks now have the look of a gal who’s been playing in the snow. And on my lips I use the newest from MAC-après Chic lipstick ($15). après Chic is MAC’s latest collection and all the products were made to give you the look of someone who’s been skiing the slopes all day.

20130102-111624.jpg
Last, but not least, I do my eyes. I keep it very simple. I first put Dior’s Diorshow Maximizer Lash Plumping Serum ($28) on my lashes and follow that with two coats of MAC’s new mascara Extreme Dimension Lash ($20). This mascara is seriously fabulous! My eyelashes actually reach my eyebrows (and no flaking or clumping). Speaking of eyebrows, I just swipe on Revlon’s Brow Fantasy ($8) to add some color and hold them in place. Then a spray of Urban Decay’s De-Slick Makeup Setter ($29) and I’m good to go!

Now, Like I said, it seems like a lot, but it’s actually quite simple. And I’m sure you have products at home that will work just as well. The key is to have glowing skin, in-from-the-cold apples, a more natural eye, and just-bitten lips. You’ll look happy, healthy, and like a true winter girl!

Summer RX For Hair

I spend a lot of time out in the sun during the summer. Not only can those rays reek havoc on your skin, but they can do major damage to your hair. Your locks can become dry, damaged, and that color you pay a fortune for fades or completely changes. It’s really important to protect your locks from the summer environments (especially chlorine). Alterna has many fabulous products for your best summer hair, but the following three are my favorites.

20120412-115517.jpg
Alterna Summer Hair After-Sun Hair Quench $20

This is a fantastic hydrating gel mask for parched hair that has spent a day in the sun. The unique texture delivers the hydration of a mask in a refreshing gel form. It is a rinse-out treatment enriched with essential minerals, vitamins, and natural humectants that instantly restore moisture. You’re left with silky, soft summer locks that shine. Most importantly, it protects hair from color fade caused by UVA/UVB and visible ray lights. This mask is a limited edition and is exclusive to Sephora.

Alterna Hair Sun-Kissed Mist $20

This is a super fun product that’s really good for your hair. It’s a lightweight golden bronzing and finishing spray. The mist creates all-over shimmer, infusing your hair with a sun-kissed glow. Your locks will be super shiny and sexy. As a bonus, the mist locks out humidity to tame those icky flyaways. And like the above mask, it protects your color so you get zero fade. And did I mention how yummy it smells?

Alterna Hair Sun Recovery Spray $20

This is a dual phase leave-in conditioner. It instantly revitalizes sun-parched hair, penetrating deeply to infuse moisture, improve manageability, and enhance shine. I carry this in my beach bag and spray it on my hair all day when I’m at the beach. It smells like summer, doesn’t leave my hair greasy, and really does help prevent color fade. Just spray it into towel-dried hair and style as usual (or let it air dry while you play in the sun!).

All products are limited edition (and the mask is exclusive) and are available at Sephora

I love summer hair products. They always smell like the beach and leave my hair full of body and shine. This Alterna line will not disappoint (but will sell out quickly).

Radiant Skin In A Pad

I’m all about glowing skin, but for me it’s a fine line between glow and a greasy shine. I’ve tried so many products that promise radiance and luminosity, but have often been left disappointed. Then I tried Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Intensive Glow Pads Brightening Treatment. At first I was not a fan. They solution is a little sticky and I didn’t notice any change. But I stuck with it and am so glad I did. These pads are a targeted treatment that brightens and renews your skin, delivering superb luminosity. They bring back your natural radiance and improve skin tone and texture. How, you ask? Powered by Activesoil Complex and infused with potent vitamins and minerals, cell turnover is increased letting the real you shine through. The sixty pads are double-sided. Use the smooth side daily and the textured side when you need a more intense experience. I use them at night in lieu of toner and just apply in a circular motion. Like I said, they are a bit sticky, but once dry (seconds really) you don’t notice it. There is no retinol, so for those of you that find retinoids too intense, this is a great alternative.

Bare Escentuals Bare Minerals Intensive Glow Pads Brightening Treatment $35 for 60
available at all Bare Escentuals locations, as well as Sephora, Ulta, and all major department stores.

PS. For those of you interested in Sephora’s Lip Reveal, it is available in stores now!

Thin Mints or Luna Bars?

It’s Girl Scout Cookie time, and while that would usually have me singing at the top of my lungs, this year not so much. I have put on a bit of pudding and need to lose about ten pounds. Now, I am not saying not to buy these scrumptious cookies, quite the opposite. I believe in the organization, I was a Girl Scout, and I believe it’s important to support them. But, I have a problem. You see, I can not eat just one cookie. No, I eat an entire box. I love them so much. Luckily, I have found a delicious alternative, and they are really good.

20120131-114059.jpg
My kryptonite- Samoas and Thin Mints

So, what is my solution? Luna Bars! These bars are made for women by women (the Girl Scouts would be so proud) and they are the best. They contain 70% organic ingredients and vitamins that meet the special needs of a woman’s body, and are available in yummy flavors. Here’s how they compare to my beloved scout cookies.

20120131-114610.jpg
The Samoa (or carmel delight) breaks down like this: a two cookie serving contains 150 calories, 8 grams of fat, and 11 grams of sugar.

20120131-115115.jpg
The Chocolate Dipped Coconut Luna bar contains 190 calories but 9 grams of protein, 11 grams sugar, and is loaded with vitamins and minerals.

20120131-115251.jpg
The Thin Mint (4 cookie serving) contains 160 calories, 10 grams sugar, 8 grams fat, and only 1 gram protein.

20120131-115358.jpg
The Chocolate Peppermint Stick Luna bar has 180 calories and 12 grams sugar. However, it also has 5 grams fat, 8 grams protein, 4 grams fiber, calcium, folic acid, vitamin D, and iron.

Surprisingly, the cookies have less calories than the bars, but Luna does offer more nutritional value. I was very surprised how much the Luna bars tasted like their Girl Scout cookie counterparts. I will still buy some Girl Scout cookies (the hubby can eat them) because I do think it’s a great thing to empower these girls and help them reach their goals. But, it’s nice to know there is an option out there that fills my craving for the most delicious cookies in the world.

Luna bars are sold individually or in boxes. I got these at Target for $5.89 per box (6 bars). The individual price was $1.09.
available at major drug and grocery stores.

And remember, you can support the Girl Scouts and still be healthy. Everything in moderation. Unfortunately, I have no self control when it comes to these iconic treats. But if you do, enjoy!
