The Little White Dress

We all know how important the “little black dress” is. It’s the one article of clothing that will get you through any social event on your calendar. But now that it’s summer, maybe we should switch things up and try a “little WHITE dress”. Yes, the old rules dictate you should only wear white Memorial Day through Labor Day (and we are now in that time frame), however, I do believe the white dress can be worn all year long with the right accessories and other pieces in your closet. White is classic, crisp, and chic, and looks fabulous with a tan. Here are some celebrities rocking the LWD.

Swim Into Summer At J. Crew

J. Crew has always been one my go-to shops for swimwear. For decades, they have offered versatile pieces in fabulous colors, prints, and fabrics. They may be on the more expensive side, but for someone who spends a lot of time in bikinis, I’ve learned you get what you pay for. They last for years, don’t stretch out, and the colors don’t fade. This season seems to be one of their best. I really love all the retro suits, but am not sure I can take the plunge. I’ve always been more of a string bikini kind of gal. Here’s just a sampling of what they are offering this season.

Deck-stripe underwire top $58 and bikini bottom $46

Deck-stripe board short $68
While the bikini bottom is a little high for me, I love the top and the board short. Perfect for those days spent kayaking.

Polka-dot underwire top $54 and retro brief $50
Here’s an example of their retro collection. I think it’s super cool looking, but I’m not brave enough to rock it.

Oxford-stripe string top $46 and string hipster $48
Ah, the good old string. I really love the colors of this suit.

Ruched femme tank $82
I haven’t worn a one-piece since high school, but I do like this one. The ruche helps hide the problematic tummy area.

Anchors Aweigh skirted tank $125
Another one of the retro pieces. It would be so cute on the right person and in the right situation.

Ruched halter top $44 (not sure about the bottoms)
J. Crew has a fabulous solids mix and match collection. That way you can get the right top and bottom for your body.

This bottom has just the right amount of ruche to hide some of that extra hip I have.

For days on my deck, lower is better (honestly these are still too high).

Just a little bit of ruffle makes this bikini a real standout.

And let’s not forget cover-ups. J. Crew has many cool options that make you a standout coming and going from the beach.

Alberta Ferritti For Macy’s

Well, Macy’s has done it again. Another amazing designer is debuting a collection for Macy’s Impulse line and it is fabulous. Alberta Ferritti for Macy’s Impulse line is an assortment of printed dresses, maxi gowns, and navy and white knit tops and sweaters. All the pieces are perfect for spring and very affordable. The line ranges from $49-$119. Here’s a peak at some of my favorite items.

Sage Double-Knit Sweater $79
A beautiful layering piece

Navy Lace Tunic $49
Tunics are really great as a seasonal transition piece. This one will be great with leggings or a pair of skinny denim.

Floral Strapless Dress $79
The ultimate garden party dress.

Beige Maxi Dress $109
This comes in three colors. The maxi dress is not going anywhere!

Printed Peasant Dress $79
I love a good peasant dress and the pattern of this one is lovely.

Floral Print Skirt $69
Long skirts are very on-trend this season.

Orange One-Shoulder Gown $99
Orange is the hot shade for spring. This would be stunning bridesmaid gown.

Floral Print Halter $59
This silhouette is wonderful for spring and summer. Super cute with cut-offs, but can easily be dressed up with a skirt or trouser.

Rachel Zoe Fall 2012

I am a hug fan of Rachel Zoe, and her fall 2012 collection was my favorite of Fashion Week. It’s a great mix of nostalgic and contemporary-cool pieces. Inspired by the rock ‘n’ roll glamour of 1960′s London, the collection features everything from knit minidresses to sequin gowns to tailored menswear-inspired suits, plus lots of fur. The collection also features the new additions of chunky art-deco jewelry and cold weather accessories. What I really love about it is that you can imagine wearing it right off the runway with barely any tweaking needed. Here are my must-haves of her collection.

Love the fur. love the suit, love the boots. You can wear this exactly the way it’s presented.

The tailoring of this suit is phenomenal. The fur details on the jacket are fabulous. And it looks like the bow-neck blouses are still going to be “in”.

Modern-day bohemian. These pieces work great together, but can also work with other items in your closet.

A new twist on the suit. I adore the monochromatic look and the cross-body bag gives it a youthful feel.

I love, love, love this dress! The color and shimmer are stunning.

The color palette is just wonderful. I am really digging the velvet shorts.

A great sequin dress can get you through many different events. And, of course, I am dying over the fur hat.

Another perfectly tailored suit and the texture is divine. The red velvet shoe is a lovely pop of color.

Bow blouse, red velvet jacket, skinny jeans, and tall boots-I want this now!!

Modern-day peacoat cut to perfection. And the red bag is amazing!

I’m a sucker for the knit minidress and it is styled just as I would wear it. Adore!!

Unexpected pieces put together. The velvet pants are scrumptous and the dress is a beauty. Throw on a fur and you’ve got “wow”.

Hello New Year’s Eve. How rockin’ would you be in this?!?!

Another knit minidress in a rich plum. And the boots are fab.

Absolute elegance.

Another version of the peacoat, only this one is a little swingy.

Love the blue-the jewel tones in the collection are awesome. And again, the tailoring is flawless.

This design can be worn all year long. It would be worth the investment.

The fur snood would keep you very warm. Winter white is so classic.

Rachel really designs a very wearable collection. It’s a treat to look at something on the runway and imagine yourself wearing it just as it’s presented. Sometimes runway shows are more about art and imagination and less about every day women wearing the product. My hat’s off to her-she has done it!

Spring Fling At The Gap

I don’t go into the Gap very often and when I do it’s usually for my husband. It’s not that I don’t like the Gap, it’s just that things tend to all look the same to me. I leave kind of uninspired. So, I was very surprise that while looking through my latest magazines, the Gap ads kept catching my eye. I had to check them out and see just what they had to offer for Spring. And let me tell you-the Gap is back. Tons of color, a huge variety, and just overall freshness. It was actually hard to narrow down my favorites.

Broken-in Straight Khaki $49.95
These come in tons of colors and I love the fit.

1969 Lightweight Always Skinny Crop $69.95
Finally, a skinny that isn’t too long. And again, these come in many colors.

Eyelet Peasant Top $59.95
Love the peasant top and this can easily go from work to play.

Slub Knit Drop-shoulder Sweater $44.95
The dolman sleeve is always great-gives an off-the-shoulder vibe.

Gap Pure Bubble Sweater $64
I love the simplicity and the neutral color. A good alternative for black.

Gap Pure Dolman-sleeve Tunic $68
Perfect for leggings, this longer silhouette is divine. And again, love off-the-shoulder.

1969 Mid-weight Real Straight Rolled Jeans $89.95
These are really cool looking and super comfy. Will work with heels or flats.

Peasant Bib Dress $69.95
This is so sweet. I adore the cut and the length. Great for Spring and Summer.

Utility Jacket $89.95
This is a great jacket for spring. It’s classic and will never go out of style.

Belted Cape Jacket $128
The perfect alternative for a trench. It’s a more trendy silhouette, but the khaki color makes it classic.

Elastic City Flats $39.95
Every girl needs a good pair of flats. These can be rolled up and stashed in your bag so you always have an out when your heels are killing your feet.

I would suggest you run (not walk) to the Gap. Spring is going to be popping with color and they have really captured that with their new collections.
